I have a 486 with cd rom and also have a laptop pc.Both are running windows 95.
I wish to install a modem into the laptop but it does not have cd rom, i was given a connecting cable and was told i can use the 486 cd rom to install the modem into the laptop, can you help me and tell me what procedure i must follow.

I suggest you copy the necessary files for installation into a tempory folder on your 486. Say C:\Modem. Use a simple utility like Interlink to connect the two and transfer the files that way. Here's how..
What you need: Serial cable (Hopefully the cable you mention)
Two small utilities called Interlnk.exe and Intersvr.exe (Probably available on the Web, might even be on your PC already)What you do: Start Interlnk.exe in dos on your laptop, you need to put the line "Device=C:\Interlnk.exe" in Config.sys
Start Intersvr.exe on the PC (Again in Dos)
You should get a screen telling you which drive letters correspond to which drives on your PC and you can then access the HD from your Laptop. Unfortuanately this does not work for your CD Rom, hence you need to copy files to the HD first. You could also try the Direct cable connection in Win95, if you've got several days to spare.....

Files & data on old computer OS Win 95
need to be transferred to new PC OS win98 cna this be done and how Ike Molenaar

I wish I could help with the answer. I need the same type help. How do I connect my Compaq laptop to my Dell PC (both purchased new in the past 2 years)so I can access files created on one with the other (both way access would be desirable). I have PowerPoint presentations created on one which I would like to access with the other computer when I am home with them both side by side. Both use W'98, 2nd ed. OS and PowerPoint 2000.

well i used to connect my two computers with laplink III or my laptop, it is a dos program but you need a null modem cable and just install it on both computers start the program tell it what com port to use. you can also use HyperTerminal it comes with 95/98.

But how to connect two PC's, e.g. notebook with Windows 2000 and desktop PC with Windows 95, directly via Ethernet? I have crossed UTP cable, and I can ping each computer from other one, but both Windows versions don't see other computer on network. And yes, I put them both in same workgroup, too.
