Okay, I admit that I may not be the smartest potato in the sack when it comes to knowing these kinds of things; but... I was wondering if it's possible to use an external Iomega 100mb SCSI Zip drive by connecting it (via 25-pin/9-pin adapter) to the 9-pin Serial port on the back of my computer?
I'm not really sure what the 9-pin Serial Port is for, so I don't know if hooking up the adapter with the SCSI ZIP drive would work or not? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch, guys! :)

If the drive is SCSI, does that mean you have a SCSI adapter in the machine with a port on the back to connect the external drive? If thats the case then that connection should be faster than one made thru a serial port. Serial ports were/are used to connect printers when the cable had to go farther than allowable with parallel cable. Parallel connection is faster though. I believe both of them are slower that then the slowest version of SCSI.

some zip drives can connect to a SCSI or a parallel port.
but it might be best just to get an older SCSI card.
It doesn't have to be fast because the zip drive isn't gonna be fast

A Future Domain SCSI connection is a 25-pin connections that looks the same as a parallel port. Apple uses a 25-pin SCSI also but I'm not sure if the pin configuration is the same. I'm thinking maybe your external SCSI may have one of those since you're asking about possibly using a 25-pin/9-pin adapter.
As others have said, that won't work. I remember reading several years ago about a parallel port adapter that would allow a SCSI device to be attached. But I haven't seen anything like that lately and it'd probably be easier to just buy a cheap SCSI card.
The 9-pin serial ports don't have much use anymore but were usually used for a serial mouse or external modem.

DAVEINCAPS...
Thanks for the detailed info. I saw a 25-pin/9-pin adapter at my local computer store and thought that I'd be able to hook up my external ZIP drive to the serial port, but I guess that isn't so.
I previously used the ZIP drive on my Mac, and figured I'd just connect it and download the Windows drivers from the Iomega site to use it on my Compaq PC. I think I'll search eBay for a cheap SCSI card as suggested. Thanks again! :)

You're welcome. As I said above I'm not sure the Apple 25-pin SCSI connection is the same as the Future Domain type 25-pin connection. You might want to research that before buying a card.
I hope you get it figured out.

G'day,
As far as I am aware, the SCSI protocol is a parallel connection.
The DB25 to DB9 converter you talk about is for serial communications.
The earlier serial connector was 25 pins; however, most recent versions for the PC have reduced this to a 9 pin connector: hence the converter.
I doubt if a simple connector will work.
regards,
Elric
