Connect Windows 98 PC to a router?

April 19, 2005 at 10:02:18
Specs: 10.3.9, 1 GB

We have just gotten internet access through a cable
modem here. The technicians from the cable company
configured the landlord's PC (an old Compaq running
Windows 98) and for some reason connected it to the
modem by USB instead of by ethernet cable.

I have two new Mac laptops (PowerBook and iBook). I configured a linksys wireless router and I can access the internet quite easily through either a direct cable correct to the router or by
wireless connection. Unfortunately, I don't have a clue what settings to change on this ancient PC to allow this computer to do the same. (Service technicians here are NOT helpful at all. They are taught to connect the PC to the modem by the USB connection, not by the ethernet cable connection, so that is all that they will do.)

I think this machine is capable of communicating with the
router. This is a TCP/IP connection, and it is automatic.
How do I configure the PC to connect to the router?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

BA,

Your router now has the appropriate login for your connection so all you have to do is make sure you remove the old login from the TCP/IP settings on the old computer and set it to "Obtain IP Address Automatically and "Obtain DNS Server Automatically". The router will do the rest.

You might also need to run the Internet connection wizard to convince windows to look for the internet through the NIC rather than the USB port.

The Cable modem is plugged into the routers wan port. The PC must be plugged into the router. The router issues the automatic Ip's. (DHCP). Go buy a wired network card. Install it,load drivers. Go in control panel network ,disable the usb network adapter. Plug the ethernet cable from the pc to the router. No computer should be connected directly to the modem.
