You need to make sure whatever device you intend to use to connect is showing no problems in device manager. Then the easiest way is to install the ISP (AOL or whatever) you intend to use.

did an istall of win98 onto a generic was running xp,was connecting fine...formatted/partition clean install can't get on net, do I really have to go back to dialup 4 this, comcast say they don't support win98...but just 'cause they are to young to know there way around it..shouldn't i still be able to..? connect

You need to make sure all drivers are installed. Unless you're using circa 1998 hardware it's likely 98 didn't set everything up. Check device manger and make sure all is OK there.

If comcast software doesn't support 98 then don't bother trying to install it. But if it's only the idiots at comcast that are telling you that, well they could be wrong. Check the OS requirements yourself. If it doesn't support 98 you may be able to find an older version that does.
