Please help, I have done some research on this error and I'm completely stuck. Whenever I turn on my computer (A Laptop, IBM ThinkPad 600E), I use to get errors 161 (Problem with battery)and 163 (Date & Time needs to be Configured). I replaced my CMOS battery with a new one. Now the 163 error still comes up, but the 161 error is replaced with a 173 error (Configureation info needs to be set). Every time I start up my computer and those errors come up, I think it tries to go into some kind of Restore program in BIOS but it says ERROR really big with error numbers 00163 and 00173. From there, the only options are OK and Cancel. Eather one I select, an arrow points to an Owners Manual. The problem is, I dont have the owners manual for this laptop. After that, I cant do anything. I try starting up from a floppy, but It shows me that error before it starts reading the floppy. My friend found out that We can probobly comfigure it if we pushed the F1 key wile booting up. It does nothing, If you hold it down wile it's booting up, you'll get error 76 301 in addition to the other two. That error just means that there is something wrong with the keyboard. I am out of Ideas, if anyone knows how to configure date and time settings, please help. Or if anyone knows how to get an IBM ThinkPad 600E owners manual, maybe it'll tell you how to resolve the problem. Thanks a ton in advanced.

Nope, Mine is ThinkPad 600E Type 2645-5AU
Also I think I might of tried that, It copies files onto a floppy to update BIOS but ony my computer, it shows that error message before It reads from the floppy, after that error message, the computer won't go any further.

First, you need to go to the IBM support site and spend some time there. Both the owners manual and the hardware manual are available for download.
It just might take you some time to find it.
You are probably not using the correct procedure to enter setup/bios.
START WITH the machine OFF.
HOLD DOWN "F1" and CONTINUE TO HOLD "F1" while turning the machine ON
CONTINUE TO HOLD "F1" as the machine starts up, and it should come right up in setup. This is a unique "bios" program, you just have to read through it, and somewhere in there is an option called something like "reinitialize" or something similar. Check all your pertinant settings, and run the reinitialize opition, I'll just bet it will fix it.
By the way, thank you so much for posting the model number of the laptop. So many ask questions about "I have a laptop....and it..."

Thanks for the usefull info, but unfortunetly, that didn't help. When I held down F1 and turned on my computer, It didn't even notice it. It did the same exact thing. I looked at the manuals and it told me what I already know "Date & Time or Configuaration Error" and to resolve it, It told me to do what the screen told me to do. I think they're talking about that restore program that wants to come up but cant. Also the files that they had arn't for my computer I have Type 2645-5AU. I have seen the restore program before and It looks like that'll do it, but you can tell it want to come up because it uses the same colors and same type of courser. It's the same theme. Before it can come up, in big huge letters, it says ERROR, with error codes 00173 and 00163. I have a Windows 98 SE boot up disk but it gets to the big error message before it reads from the floppy or a CD. This is harder then I expected it to be :-/

I have a similar problem, also with an IBM Thinkpad 600.
When I switch on I get errors 161, 192 and 163. I think the back-up battery is flat but don't know where to find it.
However, when the date/time error page comes up, if I enter the date and time, it then restarts with just a 192 error. If I quickly switch off and on again using the slider switch on the lhs of the laptop, it will reboot properly.
Hope this helps.
Regards.

That's the problem, there isnt anywhere to tell the computer what time or date it is. It come up with this huge thing on the screen after it get's past displaying the errors that says ERROR with "00173" and "00163" but somtimes it has "00161". The only thing I could do is select OK or CANCEL and either one I select, it shows a picture of a user's manual. When I looked in the users manual it said, to resolve the problem, follow the directions on screen. What do I do?

I have the exact same problem as the ones presented by computercrasher, too a tee. Computercrasher have you found a solution??? Or anybody as to how to fix the BIOS, which the problem might be
errors 0161, 0193, 0163
doesn't allow me to enter BIOS SETUP on startup, instead goes to big screen with the error numbers and 2 options, cancel, and OK. After choosing either there is aan arrow pointing to the manual.
Anyone find an answer to our problems

drac
I have the identical problem happening with my 600E. Originaly the 163,173 errors pop up with no access to reset the time and date. Tried to replace the backup battery and then I got a 161,163 error code, still no access to a time and dt screen at the ERROR page->Manual. F1 was futile at the bootup,no access to the bios. Then I prayed,,but still no response from the heavenly bios master.. Has anyone found a fix to this problem..?

Same problem here but I get error message 301 keyboard, problem is that the keyboard is new and works just fine. I get a screen with the big ERROR and I can eather Test the system or Restart. When I test the system everything checks out good when I restart it goes right back to the same screen.
But I do have an answer for all our problems, take the hard drive out and buy a DELL.
