I have win98...I REM'd the following in my Config.sys at one point..(think I read somewhere these aren't needed at the time)

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.exe

Anyway!..Seems somehow..they have been put back in again as above...

So...what's best..in or out? :¬) cheers in advance!..(you know how these things niggle at you)

I would say loose the EMM386 line but keep the himem.sys line. Windows has to have himem.sys loaded, which it does automatically now, but you can never be too careful with microsoft products.

you don't need config.sys file in win 98... only if you are running in dos mode. Leave it alone it's not hurting anything and you may just want to use DOS Mode someday

Obviously windows changed your config.sys back to what it was. Although windows doesn't need a config.sys in order to work, once it's there it needs to be setup right.
