I tried to update my DVS DVD-ROM DSR-520H firmware and it did not work Had to unplug IDE cable, power to DVD-ROM restart computer, shut down plug the IDE cable and power back to build a set of drivers so windows would see DVD-ROM now I get at startup the following: The following file is missing or corrupt C:\DVS\DVS.SYS
There is an error in your CONFIG.SYS file on line 3. Device=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS C:\>REM by--DVD-ROM DSR-520H C:\>rem By- WINDOWS Setup-LH
C:\DVD\MSCDEX.EXE/D:DVSDVD01 rem shows up in my MSCONFIG on the AUTOEXEC.BAT tab

Windows installation rem'd out the autoexec.bat mscdex line so keep it from loading since it's not needed in windows. So that line is OK.

It looks like you installed or tried to install cd dos drivers. That should be unnecessary unless you want cdrom support should you exit from windows into dos.

The message is telling you it can't find DVS.sys in the DVS folder. That means either the DVS folder isn't there or that DVS.sys isn't in it. You might want to check to see which of those is the reason.

You might also want to post back contents of your config.sys and autoexec.bat.

In spite of the error, does windows see the DVD OK now?

Yes windows does see my dvd-rom @ startup.
THe DVS file and the DVS.SYS are not anywhere on my system.
The firmware I was trying to update to when I run the program in windows it tells me I have no DVS ATAPI Devices installed. I need help if you would like to talk on the phone we can exchange numbers or email addresses and do that way cause something isn't right.
What should I do about the rem in my autoexec.bat tab?

It'd probably be better to just post here. That way others can post in with their thoughts. I haven't had too much time lately to spend here.

Run notepad and open c:\config.sys and then c:\autoexec.bat. Copy and paste their contents to your next thread.

I'm not sure about the firmware upgrade. But any problems with that shouldn't be related to what's in config.sys and autoexec.bat. What was your reason for doing the firmware upgrade?

Does the DVD player work OK in windows? I assume you have something like powerDVD or WinDVD installed to play the DVDs.

To begin where Thanks for the help I do appreciate it very much.
The DVD does read CD,& DVD's but I've been having problems playing movies with the Ulead DVD Player, since I had to reinstall my OS WIN98 SE. Before I reinstalled my OS it was playing prefectly and I have tried everything to correct the problem and nothing has work so thats why I was updating my firmware for the DVD-ROM hoping that might correct the player problem. My question now is how do remove entries in CONFIG.SYS Tab and AUTOEXEC.BAT Tab in MSCONFIG so the entries do not so errors or rem at startup?

In msconfig you have the option to enable/disable individual lines - as well, you may have noticed the 'edit' button at the bottom.

The DOS startup files (etc.) can also be edited using notepad or the old Sysedit utility

Give me ambiguity or give me something else

If you're not sure about those files, post back their contents as suggested above.

Since your problems started after the reinstallation, maybe you need to upgrade some software or drivers. Did you update your directX? The reinstallation would have left you with the older version on the 98 cd.

Download and run 274370USA8.exe from here. It updates one of the files windows uses for cdrom access.

Just what is this file you said to download {274370USA8.EXE}? Is this Webextract, if so what I'm I actually extracting and or getting, because I have a DVD-ROM not just a CD-ROM. Hey thanks for the reply and I look forward to hearing from you again. Just checked today 03/23/05. Been kinda busy but thanks again.

That file updates the cdvsd.vxd file. It's one of the files windows uses for cd drive access. It won't matter if the cd device is a DVD or regular cdrom. This microsoft page may help:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q197004

The page may not describe the problem you have but updating that file may help and won't hurt. It's an update I do on all the computers I put together. It's not available for regular free download from microsoft's site anymore but I did find it at the other site.

Don't forget about the possible need to update your directX.
