I have installed win 98 se (clean install) and when i try a cold boot error messege will apeat before win98 se is fully loaded the error messege reads (while loading device configmg: windows protection error. you need to restart your computer) and so i do aobut 20 times before it will load properly. does anyone know why this is happening and is ther a way to fix it? if so plz help. thks

Hi Casey Looks like some of your windows device drivers are causing this problem. Boot into SAFE MODE by pressing F8 at booting & have a look in the device manager as to which devices are actually causing a problem..You can get rid of any devices that show question marks on them & then reboot the system. This time when you reboot,,,keep your win98 cd handy as Windows will detect all the devices and prompt you for their drivers,,,load the drivers and hopefully that'll do it. HI thx for support but my divice manager didn't show any problems with any of my devices. so this is what i did, i wiped out my hard drive (formatted) then i reinstalled my motherboard drivers and thats when it happend i geuss something wrong with my mb driver?? is so i need some more help from all u wonderful people. need some more help if any???

Figure out the details for your m/brd & download the latest drivers for it. Then try reinstalling it.

It has the latest drivers and bios updates and it still gives me the error. Is there an other way to fix the problem??

Looks like some files are missing that's why you need to do step by setp confirmation. Press f8 & get into startup menu,,,there select Step By Step Confirmation,,,keep pressing enter till you load all the drives individually & somewhere there,,,it'll tell you where the problem lies. OK back i found out that the problem was with this msmouse.VxD. I don't know why that is but it is. i need to know how to fix it. And sometimes windows will load with no problem at all but others i will mess up do u know why that is??? can anyone help me fix the problem??????
