For some reason, the computing.net won't open up for me on my win98se PC. I type in the url and it won't load. There aren't any error messages either. But all the other addresses open fine.
All spy and adware have been elliminated and my Virus scan is up-to-date.
Is there a setting that's been altered by mistake?
Thanks

Hi Ceri,
tried that, but I still can't get computing.net open, now it goes to cannot display the page.

Hey yankyank,
Did you by any chance just UPDATE your IE6?
I updated IE6 and then I had intermittent problems with some websides...even computing.net...I kept getting problems even while using Mozilla Firefox 0.9.
I uninstalled the latest updates from IE6...and it seems now I connecting better with different websites...
JPQ

Hi JPQ,
I just checked and I have done the latest criticals on IE6. How do I just delete the last up-date? Or do I have to uninstall IE6?
Thanks

Hey yankyank,
Doubleclick my computer to open it up.
Doubleclick control panel.
Doubleclick Add/remove programs.
This will open the Add/Remove Progam Properties window dialog.
Scroll down to one to (i forgot which #) says or has something to do with Internet Explorer...it might be KB831167...or...KB870669..or...KB823559.
IT SHOULD BE the first one when you scroll down...also when goto remove it it should say that it is reverting to a PREVIOUS INSTALLATION....you should have the option to say yes or no...
JPQ

I uninstalled that last patch # KB870669
and still no luck, do you think maybe I should uninstall IE6?

Hey yankyank,
I wouldn't unistall IE6.
Have you tried using another browser like Mozilla Firefox 0.9 (free) to try and see if you can get into Computing.net with the same PC?
Are you on ISP dial up? Do you have 1 ISP or 2 ISP?
I have noticed that 1 of my ISP has been having problems also today.
It might be a DDOS attack on some websites that might be affecting the website. Less bandwidth...more traffic...result can't reach destination.
JPQ

Hi yankanuk,
▫ Try clearing the cookie cache.
▫ Open a CommandPrompt(DOS prompt) , and type:
ipconfig /flushdns <<For XP
or (I think)
winipcfg /flushdns <<For Windows98
If it doesn't work, then type:
winipcfg /?
and check if there's a command for clearing the DNS cache.I'm not entirely sure about what the winipcfg command can do to flush the DNS cache - you may need to look for a different command altogether, but I think that is your problem: some sites' DomainNames aren't being translated into IPs properly. This can be a problem at your side, or, as JPQ pointed out: the ISP's DNS server might be having some trouble.
By the way, if you are on dial-up, then this program should be a nice solution to speed things up a bit:
▫ FastCache (AnalogX)
It will build its own DNS cache on your harddisk, and store DNS info for longer than usual. Your computer can then retrieve the resolving IP from your HDD instead of requesting it from your ISP's DNS server. It will need some setting up like pointing your primary DNS server to the new cache on your HDD.___________________________________________

Thank you all for the great answers, but, unfortunately I still can't access computing.net on my win98se PC.

Yes svg, I'm on dial-up and tried the great suggestions you gave, but unfortunately no luck yet, do you think I should revert back to IE5?
Thanks

Hey yankyank,
Have you checked to see if the www.computing.net website is not in the restricted sites?
Is there a red circle with a white dash in the lower right corner of Internet Explorer when you try to goto computing.net?
If it is there goto IE Tools > Internet Options > Security (Tab) > click on Restricted sites > then click on sites
scroll down the Web sites and find www.computing.net, if it is there click on it to highlight it and remove it from the restricted website....
JPQ

▫ Adding to JPQ's suggestion:
InternetOptions>Privacy>
Press the "Advanced" button, an then checkmark "Override automatic cookie handling" and set both to "allow" all cookies. Apply changes, and then restart IE.If this turns out to be a ccokie problem, then lower the setting on the privacy page. Mine's on "medium" setting.
Don't forget to uncheck the "override..." setting afterwards, or you'll get loads of tracking cookies whilst surfing.
As an outside possibility, it could also be some minor authentication problem:
InternetOptions>Advanced page, in the list:
"Use SSL 2.0" <YES
"Use SSL 3.0" <YES
"Use TLS 1.0" <YES
And press the "Clear SSL State" button on the Content page.___________________________________________

Well... here's a few more you can try:
▫ InternetOptions>Programs page>
Press the "Reset Web Settings" button▫ Delete your current internet connection in Network Connections, and create a new one.
▫ Reinstall IE6
It could also be a timeout before you're done downloading a page, but Computing.net is not really a heavy loader, to say the least. The fact that this happens only on certain pages is strange. Usually, this is a DNS problem(can be your ISP), or cookie/authentication problem. , and spyware being a possibility you seem to have ruled out (SpyBot, Adaware, CWShredder), although the symptoms fit the bill, so I'll just ask you to create a HijackThis log and post that:
▫ HijackThis (Merijn.org)
download, run a scan, save the log, and then copy/paste the log on here.

Could be interfering if it is reacting with some of the ads on Computing.net. This would explain the somewhat random nature of sites giving problems.O8 - Extra context menu item: Web Savings - file://C:\Program Files\WebSavingsfromEbates\System\Temp\ebateswebsavings_script0.htm
▫ [manual removal] adware.websavings (Kephyr)Remove the eBates adware first, and if that doesn't solve your problem, then disable or uninstall that pop-up stopper and see if that makes a difference.
