This is what I would do.
Open the case (after turning the power off)
disconnect all the hard drive and floppy drive cables from the M/board. Remove any extra cards like sound card etc.

connect the monitor and turn the computer on. If the screen comes to life, switch off and re connect the leads to see if one is on the wrong way or whatever.

If the monitor does not fire up on its own you may have to get another video card to check that it is not the card that is faulty.

If you get aother card and it still doesn't work, take your monitor to a friends house, plug it in and see if it is working.

If it is working you may have to delve a bit deeper and swap the ram as a test.

It is basically a matter of testing the set-up with all variables.

hope this helps

if you feel uncomfortable with any of these procedures, I would bring the computer to a repair shop. Make sure that your monitor is plugged in to the proper place
Some computer illiterates refer to the whole CPU chassis as the hard drive, and you have to take this into account. This individual probably unhooked their computer and when they hooked it back up they were getting no picture
Is the monitor turning on? does it have a light that shines amber or green?
is the 15 pin D-shaped monitor connector plugged firmly into the back of the computer
does the place it is hooked to seem spongey or loose...this could be a loose video adapter

I had the same problem when I did a lot of upgrades at the same time. The bios got corrupted and had to be re-flashed. You may be getting a beep sequence of some sort. Each beep sequence for each bios means something different.
