I've got an "older" computer that I wanted to set up for doing small work and when I tried to start it, it didn't start. It does its memory test and then nothing, only a black screen with a blinking underscore. I really hope someone can tell me what is happening and how I can fix it.

Thank you !

make sure the hdd is being detected properly.
if it was an operating system problem it would give some indication, so i dont think it's that. i've come across this before and it usually means the motherboard is past it's use by date. sorry.

I suspect your battery is stone cold dead. Look through all your stuff and see if you can locate an emergency boot disk. If you have one, insert it in the floppy drive and try restarting the computer. If it loads up fine, then try rebooting without the disk. If it won't boot without the disk, it's probably the battery.

I seriously doubt that it's the battery. Can you enter the Bios 'Setup' routine? Look for a line on the screen during the memory test. It will tell you how to enter setup.
