Everything was going fine with my computer until i started using windows update (well i think this is where the problem lies). For an absolute age i was using my computer with win98SE and no problems. i don't install programs anymore it has everything on it need, and for years it remained. The recent scares about viruses, and hackers i thought i should follow the advice and keep my windows 98 computer up to date, because of vulnerabilities in programs, but i think this has casued a problem, and i don't know what to do. Basically after doing all the updates, and i had to keep restarting my computer, finally, when i wanted to turn my computer off, it appeared to shut down, but it actually restarted again. First time, i thought that i hadn't selected shutdown, but restart. No, i had definitely selected Shutdown. But now for months after, the computer no longer shutdown, but just continually starts up again. I am not prepared to reinstall windows98SE again. i have it just the way i want it with all the programs, the hardware drivers, and my data. i don't to start mucking around. I'd well believe it would take several weeks to build it back up from scratch to what i have now, and many hours of mindless boredom in between, watching endless progress bars, and clicking endless "Next" buttons, and why, because some stupid windows update (probably) has corrupted some sill power button file (i don't actually know). Does anyone know if i can fix this problem. At the moment i have to physically hit the power button at the BIOS boot screen to turn it off.

Try this, disable fast shutdown:
Click Start>Run>msconfig click OK. On the General tab, click Advanced. Click to select the Disable Fast Shutdown check box, click OK, and then click OK again. Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.

Possibly an error has occured in advanced power management? I'm sorry if I'm not helping much here but if you need to see the APM settings I beleive it was on the APM tab of the system properties dialogue box. Right click My Computer>Properties>APM tab. Hope i've helped start to steer you into a solution.

Hello David, Download and Install this first, http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/ if that does not work, try the suggestions here.

If the above does not help, post back.

If the above doesn't help...
If you do a reinstall 'on top' without a format, all the updates will disappear. The rest of your system will remain, with the exception of a few tweaks.Do yourself a favor BACKUP!
Sorry, I do not check for private messages

In #3 the second link was for XP.
I think gep meant this one:http://aumha.org/win4/a/shtdwnse.php
If all else fails the mapped drive update usually fixes it.
I haven't actually found that Windows overlay removes all Updates but it still might fix the problem if it comes to it.

Never does any harm to check for viruses but shut down problems are not usually the symptom.
