I have a Pentium3, 500 running windows 98, Matrox G400 card. I have recently changed from a 440BX motherboard to a new Asus PC3CVX (or something) motherboard. Now when ever you try to restart or shutdown the computer from within windows, it appears to start to then the screen goes black but you can still see the mouse pointer, and it locks up. You can then only restart by pushing the restart button on the case. I can't help thinking this is something to do with the new motherboard. I also installed Windows 98 second edition onto a freshly formatted harddrive after I installed the new motherboard (and PC133 RAM) and it was then that I ran into this problem. Can anybody help?
When you install Win98 it "molds" itself to the chipset of the motherboard. When you swap boards it is looking for chipsets that are not there. I recommend a clean install, or at least install over the top of your current Install to re-mold.

Hi, Since you have a new RAM installed, please check if your CPU supports PC 133 speed. It may be that your CPU supports PC 100.
Hope this helps. Evans

It doesn't matter if the cpu supports PC133, as long as you go higher, and not lower. A system calling for PC 100 will run fine on PC 133 RAM, mine always has.
