the file that you found on your pc might not function on her pc. The reason why: your pc might be win95 second edition or vise versa. I had that same problem with my pc and copied that file from a windows millenium and installed on my win95 and it didn't work. so I suggest to you to go to this website www.driverguide.com and download the proper VMM32.VXD file for the proper edtion. Example----> win95, win95second edition etc..... Now, have they installed any any new programs lately. Because when you install some programs they write to your system folder. Another question: when he/she turns on the pc does it stay in dos mode. Cause if it does I have another tip for you on that.

VMM32.VXD is a compressed driver file that is created during the installation of the Windows OS. The file does not exist in any other form but the individual drivers found in that file can be installed, but not in your case. As Julio pointed out it is highly unlikely that the same file from another pc will work unless the two OS's are identical. If driverguide has assorted files then I'd go that route.

boot with a startup disk
then put in the disk you copied vmm32.vxd to
then at a:type
copy a:vmm32.vxd c:\windows\system\vmm32
(hit enter)
that should do it.

Vmm32 is NOT a file that can just be copied from another PC OR from the Windows CD. It is generated at installation time based on the particular PC's configuration.
If you search the PC in question, you will most likely find that the file DOES exist and is not REALLY missing.
This problem is known to occur with UMax scanners.
