I have a client whose computer is turning itself off at random times. According to him, the problem just started and it is only the tower and not the monitor. The tower and monitor are attached to APC UPS. I'm going over to investigate tomorrow and was hoping someone could give me some insight into this problem. My first thought is an overheating problem, but any other suggestions?!?!?

That symptom is nonspecific.

Good luck.

I would have said power supply but with monitor still on, I am wondering if the UPS has some problems. Plug the unit in away from UPS and check, also the standard power management settings in case he messed with them. RAM going flaky usually does not do this, but a long shot. Check connections to see what may loose inside case. Plug into a another wall socket besides the one he is using just in case house power has problems. That is about all I can think of.

If it is not an overheating problem, it could be a failing power supply.

It could be anything you will have to be systematic remove all cards out of pc except ones needed to run the pc ie mainboard, processor, graphics, ram, hdd, if it is still doing it its one of the main pc components try swapping out ram first, could be power supply, basically just try and eliminate everything to do with the PC, computers are wierd they do wierd things only having patients and being systematic will u sort it.
