My computer suddenly shuts down after it boots up. Sometimes it doesn't even boot up before it shuts down. When i'm lucky I get to use my computer for about 15 mintues. Someone told me it might be a overheating problem and my fan isn't working properly so my computer is shutting itself off to protect itself. I don't think this is it. If it doesn't shut down, it freezes. When it shuts down I can't turn off the power on the computer, I have unplug it, turn it off, and then plug it in, turn it on. and then it'll try and boot up again.

Try changing or removing extra memory. Having memory that does not match or is different speeds can cause very weird problems like you described.

Dear Samantha,

I saw your message. This sounds like it requires some checking.

You mentioned you weren't sure what RAM you have on your computer.

Please check when you have the "Desktop" visible (with all the icons, etc.)

One of the icons should be "My Computer".

If you right-click on that it will produce a menu. On the bottom, it should say "Properties". If you then left-click on that, you will see information and at the bottom again, it should state the amount of RAM that you have installed in your machine.

Please try to provide some more general information about what's on your machine and then members can help you more, i.e. what equipment is connected up and what programmes are installed and if they're all running at start up.

There are a couple of things you might try straight away. Please check in your "TEMP" yellow folder. This is obtained via "Explorer/Windows/Temp". The TEMP folder can usually be emptied - by right-clicking it and then left-clicking "Explore" to see what's in there and then select all and delete them into the Recycle Bin. Leave them there for a while to see that everything is still working O.K.

Have you been Defragmenting your "C" Drive now and again. If not, please try Deframenting using the Windows utility. If this won't run to completion, please advise. There are other utilities.

This is just a start to try to sort out your problem.

Regards,

Victor

Now I can't even get my computer to turn on. So I don't think it's memory, I clean out my temp folder all the time.
