I'm at the end of my rope. My computer has been freezing when I try to do various operations. For example, I can't forward or reply to e-mail, I can't use photoshop plug ins, sometimes when opening a file, etc... When it freezez I can't even ctrl-alt-delete,
I have to restart my computer. If i'm connected to the internet when this occurs sometimes I have to restart twice because "TAPI operation fails" whatever that means. Once in a while it won't turn back on and I have to actually unplug it and plug it back in. No anxiety over here!!

Here's what I've tried
1)All typical maintenance, scandisk, defrag, update drivers, etc...
2)Removed Norton's Utilities (That was a pain)
3)opened and cleaned computer very carefully
4) Ran it with case open and fan on cpu
5) reinstalled win98
6) Took my ram out and got it checked, while I was at it I bought more ram.

Still no luck. Here's more info...
I'm getting a relatively new error on start up reading "emm386 xms manager not present"
I checked the config.sys file, it's listed on line 1 and emm386.exe is in my windows folder.
I went from 64 to 128 megs, but my system info says 96, I checked to make sure it was installed correctly also(This is a new issue)
Lastly, my device manager is reading 1 conflict with the zip drive having to do with
the device driver. The zip is a parallel port drive connected to SCSI (don't know if this matters) The zip works fine.

I'm at my ends, I don't know if anything I just mentioned has anything to do with my computer freezing. Here are my specs..
PII 350 128(reading96)megs, 6.4gig, ATI rage pro 8meg video card, voodooII 12meg accelerator, diamond monster sound card, diamond 56k v.90 modem, P2BXA motherboard.

One last note, I even mode sure it wasn't remarked and overclocked. I'm exhausted.

Thanks for any input
Alan

If you can try take your hard drive out and put it into another PC as the master. If you still have the same problems then you know it's a software problem. This is going to be a real drag because it'll cause alot of conflicts since the devices will have changed. But if you do have a hardware problem my best guess would be the mother board. The reason that I think that it is your motherboard is because of the having to unplig the PC to get it to power back on. The new power supplies allows the motherboard to power off the computer as opposed to the older power supplies that had a switch hard wired to them.

try going into BIOS and disabling all cachings of video. Then try reducing latency of RAM

Memory problem most probably. try resetting the dimms in the slots. If you are certain about the mgs, then the values have to be correct. Also it is recommended that dimms of
same size be used.

I Don't know if it will help or not, but if you are still having problems... When my computer was new, I kept freezing up too. After a lot of checking, it was narrowed down to conflict between windows 95 and the mouse, repairable by downloading a driver for my microsoft mouse. I have windows 95 and there was a conflick with the mouse, once the missing driver was downloaded, everything was fine. I now have a new microsoft mouse and am freezing up all of the time. I also need to clean my computer, as it is about 4 yrs old. So I'm hoping that the problem is either a dirty tower or a misssing driver for the mouse.
