OS: Win 98se
CPU/Ram: 120MB My sister is having
Comment:

My sister is having many problems with her computer one of which is is that she often cannot get into her email .Following are the problems . I have had a computer for several years but technically I am of little help . If some can suggest a plan of attack I could pass it on to her .
OS Windows 98 SE
Computer Make: local dealer
Processor: 350 MHz PII
120 mb memory
Screen Res: 1024 x 768
Browser: MS Internet Explorer 6.0
My computer problem was as follows: "recently reformatted. Everything worked well until boot-up today - computer starts in Safe mode. Did a warm boot while clicking F8 & noted "normal" not "safe-mode" was indeed checked. Successfully ran Scan disk. Did warm boot, again "normal" checked, again opened in Safe Mode. Tried cold boot. Still opened in Safe Mode. I discovered that my computer was not in safe mode at all - the problem was my display settings, which I corrected. However, I continue to have worsening symptoms of computer distress as follows:
Error Messages
MS Internet Explorer encounted problem and needs to close.
Illegal Action. Will be shut down.
Error loading Explorer.exe. Reinstall windows.
Windows cannot defrag this drive .... [Note: I wasn't trying to defrag!]
I ran Scan Disk - no errors.
Later, got a black screen. Used reset button. "Illigal Operation, Internet Explorer.
I installed updates for Win 98 and Win 98 SE.
Tried System File Checker, which identified corrupted file (Setupx.dll) in C:\windows\System. I chose to ignore because I was unsure whether this would help.

More "illegal operation" messages.
Invalid page fault in Kernel 32.dll
Lwemon - illegal operation
Poproxy - illegal operation.
Find fast encountered error and stopped.
Downloaded Burnin Test from madonion.com. It found 9 errors in network 1 ("timeout waiting for packet).
Now when using Internet Explorer, the screen will go black and computer automatically reboots.
Carried out a repair of IE6 through ctl pnl..... and it reinstalled without a problem .
The computer is very slow and I cannot always get to a URL but have always been able to get to my web page .

I would try to reinstall Windows over itself.

Thanks broni - I will pass that on. There are so many problems right now that if it solves some of them , she may be able to get a handle on the rest .

No guarantee, it'll fix all problems, but it won't break anything.
