I understand it is bad practice to turn off your computer by pressing the button on the computer.
I must do this at times, because my computer fails to shut down whe pressing START, SHUT DOWN AND checking shutdow. The monitor shows the Windows 98 logo, but it is frozen there and pressing any key fails to shut down computer. Does no occur every time.
Question: Is this a serious problem and what is the fix solution?

Microsoft also has a Win98 shutdown tool. Give that a shot.

Common problem with Win98. The following are the most likely cures:
Run msconfig, click advanced. Place check mark in "disable fast shutdown".
Open anti-virus program and disable scanning of floppy drive on shutdown.
Remove any sounds on shutdown.
Disable power management in control panel.
Check for conflicts in device manager.
Install Mapped drive shutdown patch

This is a tip for XP but maybe i'll work for you too...

there should be a patch at

www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate,asp

If you're now gone to xp try looking in the controlpanel - i'm danish, not sure what's called - and look for afolder : ASP

then activate advanced..?.. think it's called power control

When the shut-down patch is installed, the "disable fast shutdown" entry in msconfig is removed. Try some of the other suggestions.
