This problem suddenly happened to me. I have no idea what i could have done to have created this problem. Anyways heres my problem. Everytime i boot my computer a few seconds after after the Windows 98 screen my computer reboots. It then goes into the startup menu w/ normal, safe mode, ETC. It saids Windows did not finish loading last time i booted. So i enter normal and it boots fine.

Please help, everytime i boot i have to go through the process i mentioned above. Restarting from windows after it is running is no problem at all and goes normal.

I'd really appreciate the help.

The most recent program i installed was ALCATech BPM-Studio Profi and that is the closest program i can think of that i could have installed before this problem.

boot with a win98 boot floppy.
a:\
c:\scanreg/restore [note the forward slash]
in the resulting menu, choose an earlier date when the computer worked right. you won't lose any data

Scanreg /restore may well be the answer but I would advocate trying scanreg /fix first.
This will rebuild your "current registry" which will match the programs existing on your machine (nice idea).

If this doesn't help it would be sensible to use scanreg /restore firstly to look at the dates available. Then back out and as far as is practicable restore the programs to match that date (eg uninstall recent additions etc). That in itself might cure the problem anyway. Then go for your scanreg /restore

OK, so it's a bit boring all this, but my idea is to prevent the introduction of instabilities due to hanging registry pointers and other minor hiccups. In the long term it's worth that little bit of extra effort to prevent your system getting too muddly.

... should have added that you can do both
scanreg /fix & scanreg /restore by "shutting down to DOS" so the boot disk is not essential unless you can't start Windows.

Thanks for the replies. But as much as i hate to say this the above didn't work. I rebooted in msdos mode from Windows and typed in scanreg/fix first. It was fixed but the problem was still there. Then i tryed scanreg/restore and all the days before the 8th failed.

It's a weird fault alright.

I don't think a virus is likely but I suppose you should update your scan and run it just in case. Something or other seems to be shutting down your machine during boot.

I can only suggest a few straws to clutch. There could be something wrong in either auoexec.bat or config.sys (neither of which is essential in order for Windows to run).
Unless you use DOS for games etc the only necessary function would be if your virus checker has a line in autoexec.bat (Norton & AVG do).

Try renaming them to say autoexec.ba- and config.sy- so that they are ineffective (you can always rename them back again if this doesn't help).

In the ultimate you could hit the nut with a sledge hammer by reloading Windows over the top but it would be best to hold off for a while in the hope that some better answer comes along.
