Computer Lock-up Problem

My computer will lock up at what seems to be random times. The screen will just freeze and you won't even know it's locked up unless you try to move the mouse or type on the keyboard and forces you to hit the reset button to reboot the comptuer. It does this several times a day and it is VERY annoying!! And this problem only exsists in Windows, the computer works fine in Dos Mode. I used to have an S3 video card and I heard some people had compatibility problems with them, so I went ahead and upgraded to a 3dfx card. The problem still remains. I have all the newest drivers for all my hardware. I've run every system diagnostic tool I can find on it, nothing turns up, the device manager shows no conflicts, yet the problem remains. Here's what I'm running:
Pentium (not PII) 233
48 megs RAM
32X Toshiba CDROM
32 bit Ensoniq Soundcard
16 MB Diamond Monster Fushion Video Card
56k Motorolla Fax/Modem w/ Voice
6.4 Gig Hard Drive
Windows 98 (Upgraded from 95 - but the I had the same problem with 95)

Here are the suggestions I've had so far:
1. Upgrade the software for my bios (however, I don't see how this will do any good if it is only a windows problem)
2. It may be unstable RAM. However, this doesn't make sense either if the problem is only windows based.
3. Video Card conflict, this was proven wrong when I changed video cards.
4. Virus, I have McAfee's and Norton's most recent AV scanners and nothing turns up.
5. Windows Registry problem, There's no way I can test this without re-installing Windows, which would be a real hassle, but I've run registry cleaners on it, still nothing.

That's it. If anyone can help me or even point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it! THANKS!!

Here are the suggestions I've had so far

I've had the exact same problem with an
IBM Aptiva 2168-A51 (Pentium 133) with
128 MB of RAM. The system locks up more
than it ever has before I installed W98.
Of course, IBM is no help and microsoft
doesn't offer anything on their website
either. Can anyone help?

I had the same problem and looked around on the internet for help. Here is what I have found. Go to this site:

http://www.seark.net/notice.html

and download this file if you are under Windows 95/98:

VIPUP11.EXE

the other file if you are under Linux OS.

So far I am doing good with this patch. Hope it works for you.

My computer somtimes doesn't respond while in standby mode .I"ve tried moving the mouse ,pressing the space bar and everything else. When it finally does however, the mouse pointer is always locked up and I have to reboot most of the time. If anyone out there has experienced the similar problem or know the solution. Write back please.I'd love to know the cause.

I have run many computers, built a few of my own, and I have run into this problem before. It is a problem that all windows users have run into since 3.0. It is caused by memory corruption. Best solution: Buy more reliable memory.

I have had the same problem with my system from the second day out of the box and there is nothing more frustrating!(except the tech support, if you can call it that!)
I'm running a Proteva system.
I see there name a lot on this page. They add a whole new dimension to the Phrase "Plug and Pray"
Here are the rest of the specs.
350 pent II.
64 meg of ram
I think I will try the (http://www.seark.net/notice.html)
mentioned in repsonse #4
Others have all been leading me to belive it is a bad ram problem and I'm inclined to believe them.
When I boot the computer the memory test reads 64 meg of memory; but when I sheck the sutem settings it reads 32 meg of ram.

I have windows 98 and have had computer lock up problems since the day it came out of the box! Which was xmas 99. The screen and mouse locks up and I have to reboot. Also, I have to make sure that I don't run more than one application at a time. Such as sending mail and downloading something else. If anyone has tried response #4' suggestion, please let us know!

my 2 brothers and I all have Protevas. Theirs run windows98 and I run windows98 the new version. All have had lock-up problems. 1 brother and I had to take our computers back within a week of purchase. Thank goodness for a responsable story. Is this kind of stuff to look forward to??? I've had a devil of a time trying to get thru to proteva. Why don't they send an instruction book that actually tells you something. Some of the problems should be simple to figure out .

my computer locks up and the mouse stalls. The problem has lessened since I cleared out
some of the stuff I had downloaded since I got my computer. But the biggest problem I have is opening some software (3dstudiomax).
I get "Hardware lock is not attached, or you
are using the wrong lock, or the lock device drivers are not running." I have windows 98 plus, a 600 athlon processor, 128 mgs ram and
10 gig memory. Anybody got any ideas? I can
operate a computer but i'm a rookie at what's inside. Thanks for any help.

Just wondering if anyone's tried the exe mentioned above and thinks it's sorted the problem out. Yes, I have the same problem, the memory is high quality (can't remember the make), haven't had the system long, and I've been using BeOS without a single fault. But in Windows it's shocking I didn't have this problem at first so I think it's a software problem but can't find where on earth it came from!!
Damn it's frustrating. I'll try the exe and see.

to the user with the 3dstudio problem:
you are using a warez copy...there is a "hardware lock" required to run it.
