MY computer has recently slowed down considerably. I'm running windows 98 amd i just put in a 200 Mhz Pentium mmx chip upgraded from a 133 some two months ago. It has been working fine up to this point just about a week ago. It crashes frequently now. I have plenty of hard memory and 32mb of ram. I have not changed anything in my computer around the time this problem began occuring. I've run Norton to ensure no viruses, and that all orphan files were removed. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thank you

Might try going to Start>Run and type in msconfig and choose Startup tab. Here , every item that has a check in the box is a start up item that windows addresses at start up. some of these things can be shut down and you can save resources. I would also definitely recommend a little more RAM

i know what you're talking about. i have a 200 Mhz pentium, and in the last month or so it's performance bites. it frequently crashes, and nobody can tell me what is wrong. i've got win95 64M ram, and there is at least 50M free on each harddrive partition. if anyone can help i would greatly appreciate it. thanks.

Might be an issue with your motherboard, BIOS or compatability between the RAM and the newer CPU. Try running Scandisk in "Thorough" mode yet? How about running your System Files Checker? Are the drivers for your video card up to date? These are some of the things you need to try first....

The above post is true. I had missing program files and missing Win files. I formatted and re-installed and still had many errors and freezes. I tried many, many things for over a week. This may not help your case but when I finally got to the bottom of it--the problem was my video card drivers. What compounded the problem was that it's a Diamond Viper V330 and they put out the last revision of drivers for it in '98. Anyways, what I did that worked for me was install DirectX 7a and now it's running good.

50MBs is not much for Windows 98 to work in. This may be the problem with 1st post as well! You need about 250-500MBs so that Windows can run its files!

Post up above is probably the one you need to pay attention to. Windows 95 nor 98 will perform efficiently with only 50 mb free. Sounds to me like you seriously need to update. The first post, you do not have enough ram either.

Anthony, take a look inside your case and make sure that the fan on the CPU is working and free of dust. This can slow down your cpu and cause it to hang due to overheating.
