My computer freezes at least a few times a day while I am on the internet (using IE 5 6.0.2800.1106). I have the following installed: spybot, ad-aware, cwshredder, hijack this, panda. Sometimes when I run Ad-aware I get a fatal exception error.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

It could be a nasty Trojan Horse or a virus your software just can't remove. I've dealt a similar problem a few times. Your AntiSpyware utilities often detect and remove the effects of the trojan or virus, but cannot usually kill the infection itself. I've tried everything myself. Using Adaware Pro, I though I could get rid of the Trojan. Nope, didn't work. Not sure if you're using the Pro version of Panda Antivirus or the free version. The free version is good, but it's not super great. Norton is probably the best choice. Anyways you can give Antitrojan shield a try, It's a fully functional shareware program you can download and try. It does a good job of removing those hard to kill trojans that survive antivirus and adaware software. I also notice that your using IE 5. If you can, try updating to version 6. It plugs up some of the security vulnerabilities that plague nearly all of Microsoft's products, especially IE. If you have Win98 or higher, running Windows Update is also a good option. It'll plug up most of those security holes Microsoft has. I know, it's a pain in the rear, but until Microsoft develops a secure product, we'll all have to continue plugging Microsoft's holes. Good Luck!

it could be something in your IE browser. try downloading NoPopupsBrowser from potatohead2k.tk. Its at the bottom listed as program #2. what it does is it will open up IE with no plugins or preferences and only its little stupid skin it uses. Only a 20 kilobyte download in a zip file. Blocks popups too! If ya really wanna get creative try downloading mozilla or firefox or opera (is that even still around?) or something but i dont really reccomend it cause their not 100 percent compatable with IE. Updated IE could help too.

2 wrongs make a right, and three rights make a left.

try , in IE,,tools/internet options/general tab/temporary internet files/settings/view objects/--and make sure all those java are "installed".
Delete anything that does not say installed,,or you can delete them all and windows will reinstall anything it needs.
As for spybot, there is a spybot version,, spybot 131tx that is better than the 1.3.

Also , the avg antivirus freeware(until the end of the year will find most trojans, "with the update definitions"
Finally, most freeze ups are due to some type graphic card conflict. You can try going into the device manager and under the graphics reduce the level of hardware acceleration

I copied and pasted my IE info from System Information (which is what you all see above), however I really do have version 6 (I think!). If I look in Help, about IE it says 6.0.2800.1106IC.

98viper: I am not using a free version of Panda, it's their Titanium Antivirus 2004. Do you know where I can download Antitrojan shield?

bet: How about where I can download spybot 131tx? I just reduced the level of hardware acceleration and deleted one item that didn't say "installed".

Thank you all for the suggestions, I will try them all and hopefully something will work!

If you browse the main page here,majorgeeks.com you will find updates for most popular programs.
BTW, this definition file is actually specifically for an ie security hole that shows as DSO exploit, it is not the latest definition for spybot.(just wanted to make that clear, as it appears you are attempting to keep your pc up to date.)

myemerald,

"bet: How about where I can download spybot 131tx?"

131tx, wasn't suppose to be a public release. So, don't install it, please, and thanks. Do you keep your Ad-Aware SE 1.05, and SpyBot S&D 1.3 updated? {the SSD beta is at 1.4 B2}

Your IE {Internet Explorer}, was a custom one, yes? The reason I ask that is; "6.0.2800.1106IC" The IC, is Internet Content Provider.(IEAK) xp

"Sometimes when I run Ad-Aware I get a fatal exception error."

What is the exact error you get? That might help us, to help you correct the problem.

Do you use scandisk, and defrag? If so, may I ask how often. Do you empty your temporary internet files, and cookies, at different times. As in start fresh. Do you have a lot of things loaded/running in the background? By that, I mean things that don't need to be, until you use them. Do you have any backup programs, for instance GoBack, installed. Do you have MS Word, Works installed?

Have you applied the updates, for your browser, at window$ update? Any errors, at all, before a freeze? To many questions, to list ;-)

bet & crazyone: Ok you two, should I or shouldn't I download the spybot 131tx?

neotms88: I downloaded AntiVir, ran it, and it found: Trojan horse TR/Small.GS.2, I deleted it. I wonder if this might have been the problem?

CrazyOne: I didn't know that my IE was custom, I perform my updates from the Microsoft website. Should I do something to correct this?

The error I received while running an ad-aware scan was this: fatal exception OD at 0246:013F47FB

I also just received this error when rebooting my system after installing AntiVir: fatal error at 0028:C00028EA in VXD VMM(a) + 000018EA

I run scan disk and defrag, but not very often I'm afraid. How often should I do this? I do empty my temp internet files and cookies when I think of it. I think I need to set a schedule for myself. Right?

I don't keep anything running in the background. Yes I do have MS Word and Works installed, but they don't run in the background.

Do you mean do I get an error and then it freezes? If so, no I don't.

I haven't had coffe yet this morning, so I hope I am making sense to you!

I just attempted to get here (via "my favorites") and my comptuer suddenly decided to reboot itself. Yikes, what's going on? These things really do seem to have a mind of their own don't they?

52. A customer calls and states that the computer reboots on its own. What is more than likely the cause?

A. The BIOS is set to reboot periodically.
B. The external SCSI CD-RW is using too much power.
C. The CMOS is configured to power-cycle periodically.
D. The power supply is not providing enough power to the system.

Answer: d

Glad I could help with the antivirus, in regards to ScanDisk/ Defrag, run them weekly, ScanDisk first.

As for SpyBot 131tx, I wouldn't use it, I have a feeling that CrazyOne might be the programer, I coud be wrong (Great program), I am using version 1.2 (from a Maximum PC CD I got at a local supermarket, "Special winXP issue", it is the same cd that I got antivir from)

As for the trojan, it might have caused the problem, but the effects might remain until a reinstall of IE.

Try searching "0246:013F47FB" in the microsoft kb for more information on the ad-aware prob.

Thanks for the quiz Bryan!

Neotms88, so this may be a dumb question but how do I go about reinstalling IE? Do I simply remove it and then redownload and install from MS website? And do you think that will help?

I'm using Spybot 1.3

Linda,

I know that you added a CD-RW to the Dell machine. Have you added anything else to it?

When IE freezes are you happening to be listening to any music through the CD-RW at the time when IE freezes?

Re: The quiz. More particularly it was the answer I was displaying suggesting that the likely cause of the rebooting is related to your power supply not providing enough power to your machine.

The power supply may need to be replaced with a higher wattage power supply or it is simply on it's way out. They do wear out. How old is the Dell?

Bryan

Hi Bryan!

I knew what you were telling me with the quiz :) Is there a way to check the power supply to see if it is wearing out?

I bought the Dell in Jan 1999, and have not added anything other that the CD-RW. No, I am not using the CD-RW when the freeze occurs.

Linda

First go to ther "Add/remove programs" in the "comtrol pannel" find Microsoft Internet Explorer (or similar) click "Change/ Remove" try a repair first to see if that fixes it. If not at the same screen, select uninstall. find a cd with IE on it (5.01 or better) and install it (some AOheLl CDs have it, Wal*Mart connect has it too). You can use the kind that downloads it form Microsoft, but if you have dial-up I wouldn't suggest it. If you want to customize the title bar/ logo see the Internet Explorer section at http://www.95isalive.com

In your case I don't suspect the power supply as being under rated for your consumption needs from the information you provided.

Re: Test a power supply.
Yes you can but to actually evaluate the information is above my head.

Basically, you can use a volt meter to test the output power on a live molex connector.
The yellow wire at 12V and the red at 5V.
They commonly can show a variance of +/-1-2%

On the 12V wire one would find it acceptable to get between 11.76V and 12.24V and 4.9V-5.1V on the 5V wire.
But, there is a lot more to it involving what is happening with the power distribution at the time of testing.

However, if you are only getting a steady 11.4V and/or 4.7V then you know it is not providing the correct amount of power.
