Help!
Ihave just built my new system and I can't get windows 98 to install. The system seems to work perfectly in DOS but when you install windows it freezes in the same place every time (just after the transfering files message, it displays the blue setup screen,a box appears in the middle with an install icon in, and it freezes.) I have tried different disk, altered the bios settings and removed all unneccesary hardware all to no avail. if it is hardware, why is it in the same place every time?My system
abit be6 motherboard
P3 550 CPU
64mb pc100 ram
Creative voodoo banshee
13 gig fujitsu H/DAll comments welcome!!
Thanks

try going into your bios and turning off the
virus protect.
sometimes it works and sometimes not but worth a look. its worked for me on more that one occasion.
good luck
martin

Have a similar problem with the BE6 MB. Mine is giving me a Fatal Exception Error when it goes to detect my hardware...
Have reset BIOS settings to defaults as well... I have tried 2 differnt processors (PIII 533 and PII 400), IDE and SCSI Hard Drives, Different graphics cards, cd-roms, cases... EVERYTHING!!! Wondering if it could be RAM or the BE6. ???
If I find anything out, I will let you know. Just curious.. are you runnng a 66Mhz bus or 100??

I know it sounds goofy, but are you sure your
cd is clean. It might have a grease spot on it or something making it mis-read in the same spot every time.

great call bert !!!!
but he did say he tried a diffrent diskram causes problems also power supplies
check for a bios update for the abit unless it's a fresh board

Doh, you are right Marvin, I overlooked that.
Sorry eh. I don't read through stuff all the way sometimes.

Thanks guy's
I.ve just tried clocking the bus speed to 66 mhz and it went past the usual stage this time. I entered the oem number but then iit locked up at the copying files stage. After this I tried installing again and it was back to stopping at the original stage!?
I have also tried.
clearing cmos & switching off internal/bios cachechanging memory sticks (memory is labelled as pc100)
changing setup /options to minimum
using bootdisk with ramdrive
Marvin, you say power supplies can cause problems. This is a cheap case with atx power supply. does pIII have similar problems to Athlon or is it more stable?
Also i'm using a creative 52x CD rom. this seems to spin Very fast during install. would a read error cause a lockup or would it give an error message?
Thanks for all you help
shaun
