i just dumped everything and restored everything with my compaq recovery CD but now when i connect to the internet my computer locks up completely no mouse no keyboard, no error message. the modem is one of thos crappy lucent winmodems.
here's a list of what i've tried so far to resolve the problem:
i tried updating to the latest winmodem drivers,
i tried using netscape,
i tried replacing it with my old 33.6 modem,
i tried two different isp's,
i checked for conflicts in device manager,
i tried formatting my HD and reinstalling everything again (3times),
(I havent installed any other software just whatever was on the product recovery cd),is there anything else i could try?
(i should probably get a real compter)

If you are using Netscape, first, try disabling JAVA and JAVASCRIPT via the Preference settings found under Netscape's EDIT menu before trying to connect. (Click on the Advanced tab and remove the checks next to Java and JavaScript.) Most web sites will still load without Java and that cures a lot of woes. It can always be re-enabled whenever you need it.
Also, if you are using a special "wheelmouse" driver, uninstall it and let Windows install it's generic driver. (I did that with my Compaq 5340 and it cured its tendency to freeze up which it did whenevertheheck it felt like it.)
If this does not work, also try switching the phone jack in the back of the PC from the Line jack to the Phone jack. I found that mine was mis-labeled.
GOOD LUCK
