While on my machine today, I was typing in my email and the window closed by itself. It did this more than once so I thought a reboot would straighten it out. When I rebooted...the computer did absolutely nothing when I pushed the on switch. I opened the case....cleaned out all the dust etc and made sure all the connections were tight. I pushed the on button again and it went to start but shut right back down again. I am vacj to it doing nothing again. Could this ne the battery? It is a few years old at least. I had the power supply checked and it is fine. I also noticed lately it had been losing a couple minutes in time and I could never get it to reset to the correct time. If it is a battery,,,will I need to reset anything once I install a new one?

If you have two memory sticks in there I would try booting with one at a time to see if its the memory's fault.
If you do get a new motherboard battery you may get a bios message on the first boot up saying the settings were not found, defaults being loaded. No reason not to use the defaults unless you have made changes in your current bios.

Even if it where the battery it still should have shown text on the screen. The first thing to load when you start a pc is the graphics card so I would suspect that do you have another card you could try in it just to see if it will boot or pull out the card then then put it back and see if it boots this happened on mine once but only after I had been in the PC for some reason, not by its self.

Right now I have just one stick of memory but I will get another one and give that a try. Remember, when I push the start button...I get absolutely nothing.

"I pushed the on button again and it went to start but shut right back down again".
What happens if you continue to hold down the start button?
Mesich

When you turn it on do you get the post beep or not that will tell you a lot if it beeps or not and how many. this site will explain the beeps and what they are. http://www.pchell.com/hardware/beepcodes.shtml
Good luck

Nothing happenes when I hold down the start button at all. No beeps no nothing. Once oe twice it may attempt to start but it shuts right down again in a few seconds.

Are all of your fans working? I had a machine where one of the fans died, and the PC did the same thing as yours from overheating.

Lisa....when I get it to do anything, the fans start up but shut down right away like the computer.

Who tested the power supply. It seems as if that is the problem. It could also be a fried motherboard.

Hi there,
I have similar problem with my laptop.
When I boot up the computer i can hear the system verifying flopy, CD drive and HD and then nothing (fan is still working). Screen remains dark. I tried to reboot it from start up disk - no luck. Could this be a problem with the HD? If HD is not working would I be able to reboot the computer with start up disk?
