Reply: (edit)There are a few possibilities. RAM problems can do this, so try taking out the sticks and cleaning their edge connectors with a pencil eraser. If no better try each stick on its own in first position. If it still does it then we need to look elsewhere. DerekW

Reply: (edit)Did you try each stick one at a time in first position? You can also get a free RAM tester from www.docmemory.com (you "create" a floppy from the download then boot with it). Assuming it's not RAM, the difficulty here is to try and diagnose the problem, rather than trying everything under the sun. You could try this: Type msconfig in the Run box. Go to the Startup tab temporarily untick everything except ScanRegistry. If only some items are ticked then make a note of which ones they are, so that you can restore them later. Note that two LoadPowerProfile entries is normal (worth unticking them I reckon). Don't go online like this because your AV and/or Firewall are likely to be disabled. If the machine seems to behave OK then it's a case of ticking each item until you find which one is messing it up. If it still does it with everything except ScanRegistry unticked then we are head scratching again. DerekW
