windows 95 was installed onto a 1 gig hdd but when i went into properties and to my surprise said the hard drive was 530 mb so i double checked and then reinstalled windows. It was still reading 530 mb and 1 gig in bios and on the hdd. I formatted it with a system disk and removed the partition i then tried to reinstall windows a used a win 98 startup disk so i couuld get the cd rom working. When i was aboput to install win95, in setup i then got a message explaining the space problem it was:
"Setup has found a compressed volume or a disk - cache utility on your computer.Quit Setup and check your compressed volume with your disk compression software or remove the disk cache utility. Then run setup again." The problem is i dont want anything on the harddrive and i need the full gig so i dont want it to be compressd. How do i get rid of the compressed area on the disk i dont have any softweare to do this. Thanks in advance Joe.

if that doesnt' work, try this:

www.maxtor.com/softwaredownload/main/mtllf.exe

it's a low-level format utility and should recognize every hidden partition and take it out giving you back your space, best of luck!

A compressed drive is a Compressed Volume File (CVF)
It is stored in the root directory of an uncompressed drive,
the Host drive.
The (CVF) attributes are
Read-only
Hidden
System.
Defragmenter doesn't move it .
Microsoft (CVF) name will be something like:
Drvspace.000
Dblspace.002
