I recently purchased a Gateway PC with an internal Iomega ZIP drive. I wish to use some of the ZIP disks for storage of photos (.jpg, .bmp. files, etc.), and .wav files. Recently I was going through the many options on the menus and noticed that there was a disk compression utility. Has anyone had any experience with compressing a ZIP disk? Should you compress it before you write any data to it or can you compress it anytime - even after storing data on it. I know of the horror stories that go along with compressing a hard drive and am a bit leary of doing any kind of disk compression at all! Your help would be greatly appreciated.

You can compress any disk whilst it holds data. I have an internal ZIP drive and several media, all of which hold graphics. I compressed these to hold double the original amount of data (200MB).

Just explore the disk at its root in explorer and click the right-mouse button. Choose compression from the options you are given and follow the instructions.

At one time, I compressed all of my zip disks. Afterward, I noticed Iomega didn't recommend this. Then, the drive clicked repetedly when trying to access disks. I contacted Iomega and they said that the compression had damaged my drive, and thus all my disks. They did replace them, but only with a refurbished zip drive with a 3-month warranty. I do NOT recommend compressing any zip disks.
