Would anyone know if a hard drive from a Compaq desk pro would be able to work in a Dell Optiplex GX1 or how I could find out if it does please?

If it's an IDE drive, it should be fine. If the Compaq has a SCSI drive, then you'll need to install a SCSI card on the Dell.

There was a thread recently where someone had problems with a Compaq drive.

Although the hardware will be compatible, you may have to re-partition and format the drive as Compaq does something weird to the formatting that is inconsistent with other computers.
