I would like to connect a external cd-rw to my Compaq's USB port. How is this possible when I was just informed that the USB port is only used by Compaq's video camera? How dumb is that? My OS is Windows 95. I heard something about OSR2 solving this problem. Is it true? Please help me find a less complex way of handling this problem.

I have not had much luck trying to use the USB ports with Windows 95 as the operating system. The USB ports work great with Windows 98 and Windows 2k. Most likely the external drive's minumum system requirements will state at least Windows 98 or Windows 2k

Thank you for responding to my message. I really don't want to change my Win 95 OS. I will only do this as a last resort. I revisited Compaq's website. My main reason was, I heard via internet, that if I upgrade my Win 95 OSR 2.0 to Win 95 OSR 2.1 (usbsupp.exe) this would solve my USB port issue. In Compaq's website, I found that I could used Compaq's Universal Serial Port Wrapper (CPQUSB.EXE)to install Microsoft Windows 95 OSR 2.1 supplement (USBSUPP.EXE)without user interaction. In my many failed attempts, I'm lost. If you find time in your schedule, can you find out for me, what I am possibly doing wrong in my struggle to download? I'm already quite nervous after reading this message board's problems with usbsupp.exe. Compaq's doesn't explain in details how to perform this procedure. I just don't know where to start anymore.

Thanks again!

What make and model is the external CD-RW drive? Like I was saying you will find it much easier to install any USB device. If you are running Windows 98 or Windows 98 SE. Out of the box they support the USB port.

There are different types of Windows 95 out there. Buying it out of the box and OEM preinstalled by the manufacturer. If I installed out of the box Window 95, it might conflict with my OEM's Windows 95.
