Yes got to love these Compaq's

Compaq deskpro 575 pentium 75.

I have formated my hard drive (2.1G) and cannot get the damn thing to boot. I have done this many times before with no problems....but this is the first time on a compaq (i heard they could be troublesome)
I have several bootdisks none seem to work on this machine.(they work on all others)
actually i can't get it to see the cd rom to reinstall windows 98. To make things worse i can't for the life of me get into the bios settings!! can someone explain exactly how to do this...
I have heard of this compaq setup program?
don't know how it works and where to get it
if i need it.

many thax in advance. Brian

On a Compaq it should be F10.

Also if this has any onboard components then your going to have more trouble headed your way. Once into the bios make sure that the floppy drive has been enabled and that the boot sequence is correct.

This is a long shot here but this wouldn't by chance be an old SCSI Compaq would it? I can tell by the number/pentium that it is quite old. I have the same problem with my SCSI. No matter what I do it won't see the cd rom. Even tried those "special" SCSI cd rom driver people conned me into buying. I always end up installing my floppy win95A on it then once inside windows removing it and reinstalling win95b before I reboot again because of the cd rom issue. I know I need a controller card but don't want to invest the money in it. Too hard to find too. But anyway that could be your problem. Like I said just a shot in the dark.

No it's not a SCSI compaq.

I tried F10 that doesn't work.

Anyone else..........
I've got to get this thing going.

Compcrap should be shot....

I agree F10 should work. Did you just format or fdisk as well because don't Compcrap keep the BIOS settings on a small non-DOS partition ?

Have you tried searching for a Setup disk

I could get you a setup disk if you wanted. Well it would be a set of two disks. They would be from the Compaq 7360 I told you about and would have win98SE on it. I don't know if you would want to try that or not. I could send you the disks by snail mail. Let me know. It would only take me a day to go and make the disks. I don't know if that would help or not. I know that Compaq has to have their secret partition and this would make that for you and put the dos files in. I'm willing to do it if you are willing to try. Let me know.

Bios settings are not stored on the hard drive they are kept on a ROM chip. Agreeing that I don't like Compaq. F10 works for all Compaqs. You do have to make sure that it is used in the proper place. This is when the Compaq Logo is displayed.

I have another question. Now you got me thinking on this thing here. Just how far does it go into the boot? I mean what comes up on the screen? Do you get the Compaq logo? Do you get any of the setup information on the computer? Just how far does the boot go? Maybe it isn't in needing the disks. Maybe something else has gone haywire on you. These are just thoughts running through my head thinking on this thing but you never know what you may come up with. Post back and let me know just how far and what you see when it tries to boot.

Never do i see a "Compaq" logo but i didn't even see one when everything was fine. Because of this i do not know when to press F10. It does a little mem test which you can press esc to skip and that is all you see till win 98 comes up but now it's the Dos prompt. The computer boots to Dos but no cd rom. Like i said before i have a few good boot disks that come with cd rom support one i made on the comp before i formated. I've checked the cd rom on another comp, and checked all cables.

come on guys and gals i know you can get this one it seems pretty simple......well that's what i thought.

Well it seems to me you have bypassed the Compaq thing, Thank God for that. But anyway after hearing how far your boot goes, it seems to me that the problem is in the boot disk. Try getting your hands on another one maybe. I know you already probably tied that a million and one times, but other then loading win95 from floppies and then changing it once you get inside windows, I don't know what else to tell you to do. I'm plum out of ideas on this one. You should enter it as "stumper of the week". hahaha. Sorry couldn't resist. Don't know how else to help. Sorry.

Well i am up and running at 100 %
ok maybe 99.9% still have to load some stuff back in. I never did get into the bios settings. Here is what i did to get it to work. I took the hard drive out put it in another comp as a slave drive
copied all the files from the win 98 cd to a directory called win98....then i put it back with my boot disk i got to c: and ran setup
then finally installed my cd rom and that's it.

I'd like to thank everyone for their
time & efforts.....especially the big "T"

Any time Brian. Just glad you got it up and running. Just goes to show what extremes we go to for our computers. As I said before I learned how to remove one version of windows and install another version of windows without leaving windows if you can belive that. It's called determination to outwit the computer. hahaha.
But seriously anytime you think I might be able to help I'm sure you know how to find me.
