Hi,I am trying to restore my system after I formatted the HD. I have these quick restore disk that I thought would slove my problem but I am getting an error. Weh I restart the system with the disk installed it starts running at 90% I get an error " an invalid cluster was found in a directory entry" then " file size does not match FAT allocation for file". I can someone please tell me what this means and any suggestions. A coworker just told me that I may need to run scandisk first, if so how would I do this because I think I only have DOS. thanks for any help, Konnie

How did you format? if you used Fdisk or some other 3rd party utility then your quick restore disk will probably not work and you will have to use a full install CD. Compaq's setup requires you to leave the operating system on the hard drive to do a quick restore. post back..

compaqs quick restore disk will look for some codecs they install on the HDD for it to work so when you formatted and installed an OS that virtually makes them useless. however you may still get some of the drivers by just placing the disk in the drive and let it auto-read once you are at the desktop.

If you're getting a bad cluster error, then your hard disk has damage on it. Since you're booting to MS-DOS, you should have the MS-DOS version of SCANDISK on the diskette. From the A:\ prompt, type SCANDISK C: and press the <Enter> key. Let it do a FULL DISK scan (yeah .. it will take time, but you're trying to write data to a damaged area of the disk so it must be marked as unusable).

i have a compaq preario 7482 pc. i want to restore my factory settings by using the restore discs 1 and 2. So i put in disc no.1 and is starts loading fine, but when it gets up to 30% it stops and does not carry on. i left it over night and the next day it still was at 38%. So i take out the disc and and start running the pc , but all that comes up is "No disc found in any drives, please insert disc and press any key. please what shall i do? the disc hasn't go any scratches on it. Thank you.
