I have having trouble with a compaq presario 5170. Explorer was causing a page fault error and after rebooting several times, Windows wouldn't boot anymore and said some files were corrupted. Decided to try to repair Win 98 or reinstall. I tried a boot disk, but wouldn't recognize the A drive. Couldn't find a way to change boot sequence. Believe me, I tried everything. It doesn't offer the option. Finally disconnected the hard drive and tried a boot disk. a message came up and said it automatically changed the configuration to boot from the disk first then CD, but gave me error about non-system disk. Tried putting windows CD in, and disconnecting Floppy drive and hard drive and I got a message saying it had changed to make CD first boot. I could hear the CD spinning, but then gave error of non-system disk. Connected the hard drive again and came up to a prompt that let me choose between safe mode and dos prompt, etc, but not boot with CD support, as I was hoping. I don't know what to do anymore. Thought about taking out the hard drive and installing as a second on another computer and trying to install Windows that way, because from the forums I have read, the bios thing seems to be a compaq problem. I would appreciate any suggestions and help on this. Thanks

To change the boot sequence on a Compaq when the Compaq screen comes up hit the F10 key. That takes you into setup. From there you can set the boot sequence.

Make sure that the bootdisk is an actual boot disk. In order for the disk to really boot, DOS needs to have certain files on a special place on the disk. Try this: 1. Download WinImage (try www.downloads.com or search for it on google) 2. download this: http://newdos.yginfo.net/dosware/dos71_1.zip 3. And then this: http://newdos.yginfo.net/dosware/dos71_2.zip 4. Use either WinImage or the Makeboot.exe command to make the first disk (bootable). The second disk isn't bootable, but it's got programs that you might need (fdisk, etc. I think).
