Hi,
I have a compaq presario (5400US) Win98SE.
I put in a new HD and now the moniter is limited to 16 colors 640/480. In the display settings, the drop down menu only has 2 colors and 16 colors. the bar to change the screeen area is wont move. The monitor driver works, but the video adapter is standard PCI graphics (VGA)
how can i get more colors?
thanks in advance!

When you get to your specific machine, download the video drivers.

What was the:

category
family
series
model/processor

you entered? Also if the video adapter is an add-on card, is it the one that originally came with the computer? If not you'll need to open the case to ID the card and then download the drivers from the card manufacturer.

I doubt if you can get any help from Compaq support for hardware specs unless you send emails or go and search or post questions in their Compaq Community forum

You may install AIDA32 and gather information from its scan about your Video card.

Apparently that machine came with XP so compaq didn't supply 98 drivers. It appears to be an intel 82815 video controller. The intel drivers are here:

82815 drivers

You would use the first download.

I assume the 82815 is onboard. Is it possible a different video card was added before you got the machine? Are 2 monitor connections showing in the back of the computer?

Also, if you haven't already, you should install the chipset update. Compaq lists it on the w95 OS page for the 5400US. There may be a more recent version at intel's site but I didn't check.

Aida32 is telling you the truth. Windows installs the 'Standard' driver.

The problem with some of the diagnostic software, like aida32, is they have their limitations. They either tell you what windows already knows or they too are unfamiliar with the hardware.

Windows loads one of the standard video drivers if it doesn't recognize the adapter. I suspect all aida32 does is echo back how windows identifies the hardware.

That's why I've always found that opening the case and visually inspecting the hardware (or checking the motherboard manufacturer's site) works much better than any diagnostic software to ID the hardware.

what is the chipset update? what does it do?

And thank you for your help.
I also have a question about the intergrated audio. It seems to skip like a record player. I used the driver from the compaq site.

Motherboards made after the introducton of windows 98 may need chipset drivers that 98 doesn't have. Also updates are sometimes released to fix problems that weren't evident with the original drivers.

If you go to device manager in system in control panel you can see the hardware in your computer. The hard drive and floppy controllers as well as the stuff in 'system devices' all need drivers to work right. It is the motherboard chipset drivers that configure this hardware.

I don't know why compaq has the chipset update on the 95 page and not the 98 page. Usually that means compaq believes the drivers on the 98 cd are sufficient. But since your machine is a relatively new 1.2 gig, I would think a chipset update would be needed.

You have a USB KB and USB mouse or USB KB and PS/2 mouse?

Make sure the USB is enabled in cmos.

Go to device manager in system in control panel and look for any yellow ? or !. Does 'Universal Serial Bus controllers' show there?

Hi P....

I can sense how desperate and frustrated you feel:-(

I can recall how I've felt under similar circumstances!

I hoped AIDA32 could help! It is better than Windows' Device Manager in queriying the harware data but not the same as visual inspection. But, there are hardware that defy identification despite the most rigerous and thorough direct examination. You may still need published data to convert the obscure alphanumeric information on we can painstakingly copy from the devices!

When things seem deperate, we have to turn to what we could have over looked. Can you tell us details about " I put in a new HD and now the moniter is limited to 16 colors 640/480".

What happend to the Old HDD?
What was the reason for the New HDD uinstall?

Is this New HDD the Primary HDD?

The reason behind the question is simply to find out whether or not Scanreg /Restore in MS DOS MODE is still a viable option to Restore status quo ante.

I hope there will be a joyful resolution to your Computer problem soon.

The old HD was replaced so i could start over and
have more space. It is the primary. The video
adapter now works fine and all colors are present.
The last problem was the audio skipped like a
record for MP3s. Now i cant do anything because
the key board which is USB and the mouse that is
PS2 arent detected and i cant use both so i cant
get into anything on that machine

You should be able to manuever there with the TAB, ALT and arrow keys. Or try booting to safe mode. It might work then. If you get to device manager delete the mouse, if it's showing there, and reboot. If it's not showing do an 'add new hardware' from control panel.

But the mouse and USB are listed?

The PCI card could be anything. Do you have an add-on card that's not identified elsewhere in device manager? Sometimes it will show PCI card when it's actually an onboard device.

Did you get to device manager from safe mode or by using the keys?

If the PC you are posting here is a desktop and it has a non-USB KBD(PS/2 or serial), you could borrow that temporarily to complete the the troubleshoot in the sick PC. Just a thought!

I restarted the computer and it added all the hardware as if i just installed the operating system. After that it worked ok. The only problem that still exists is that the audio drivers off the compaq site. When i play music, the song skips as if it were a record. This happens to all of the songs. It's not just the MP3. How can i fix this or get a new driver.

It looks like there are two possible audio setups for that computer--the ADI soundmax and the ADI AC97 soundmax. Are you sure you installed the correct one?

The drivers on the compaq site look to be pretty new. If you haven't tried that newer version you should download it and try it.

Otherwise you may be able to do a google search for:

"adi soundmax" drivers

or

"adi ac97 soundmax" drivers

(whichever is correct for you) and see what you come up with.

SP23399.exe
which i got off the HP website somewhere.

And from the compaq site, they offer 2 drivers. What is the difference? and why are they the only ones that works (Somewhat)?

SP23399 isn't the right number. You probably typed it in wrong. They say that's not a valid number. Anyway the 2 on compaq's site are sp24482 and sp23296. They're the most recent driver version that compaq has for the two possible audio configurations.

Generic drivers might work but for onboard audio, it's usually best to get the drivers from the motherboard manufacturer.

Are you sure the choppy sound isn't due to whatever media player you're using.

If you're not sure which is correct, I'd download both drivers. Then go to add/ remove programs in control panel and remove any old sound drivers (if any are listed).

Then install one of the files according to whatever instructions they have. If that doesn't work, uninstall it (if necessary) and install the second set.

I'm still thinking those are the best drivers you're going to get. Although you could try the google search I mentioned above.

There is a forum somewhere on the compaq site. I had asked a question there awhile ago. I don't have the link but you should be able to find it if you browse their site. Someone there may be able to better help you if neither driver works right.

Other than what I suggested above, compaq forum or google search, you might try uninstalling and then reinstalling your media player software.

good luck
