I'm researching this for my boss, and have no firsthand experience with the problem. He has a Compaq laptop Presario Series 1680 computer. The mouse on this computer is a touchpad mouse which is tapped rather than clicked. He is working with the Microsoft Word 98 word processing package in the Windows 95 operating system. He leaves his mouse inactive with the cursor arrow pointing at a random spot on the page. After about 30 seconds the mouse will automatically "click" and activate whatever the pointer happens to be pointing at. He has tried changing the mouse settings, but can find no option to turn off this apparent default automatic clicking phenomenon. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Might want to check these things. The configuration settings for the mouse...there's got to be something in there. Check the standby mode for the computer. See if there's anything in there about automatic clicking (I've not heard of it, but that means diddly).

Does it act like a left click all the time? If it's "activating" then we're back to the configuration of the mouse. Make sure double-click setting isn't tweaked to be performed on a "single-click" (this I've seen). Seems strange it would activate. Those mouse pads are the worse invention ever for a computer. Hard to get used to and specific to laptops.
