I recently received a Compaq Presario 1250 Notebook free of charge from a co-worker. He said it doesn't work and he gave it to me to troubleshoot. It all started when he wanted to upgrade the memory. He put a 128MB module in and ever since the machine stopped responding. The Compaq Presario 1250 has a max memory of 96MB. ( the system board 32MB plus a memory module of 64MB) Think that the overloaded memory has something to do with the machine not responding?

According to a friend of mine, the notebook doesn't work with the original 64MB memory chip installed. I checked the CPU (AMD K6-300) and doesn't seem to be burned out. Any suggestions?

u can dowload dianostics floppy from compaq web site . do u have the quick restore cd? try that dude

Cannot even reach the POST. No way I can use a diagnostic floppy or Quick Restore CD. The only indication I get on the notebook is power from AC cord and battery if it is installed. No other lights,no display, nothing. I have it apart right now and will try the processor in another machine.

AMD K6 300 CPU works fine in my other spare desktop. So the CPU factor is out. I am completely disassembling the Compaq Presario 1250 to check for a bad system board or power supply. Any other suggestions?

i've been dealing with some compaq laptops recently and they're a headache. my suggestion to you is to take out the extra ram (compaqs are picky about what kinda ram you use), if that doesn't work and you're getting no post, then you're probably looking at a problem with the system board. if it is the system board your best bet is to have it repaired. compaq laptop system boards are not cheap, and if you got it for free or for a cheap price, then repairing the system board would be the cheapest.

Can anybody please make me a copy of the restore CD for the 1250? Or all I actually need is the display driver. The darn thing will only display 16 colors at 640X480 and I cannot find the driver anywhere!...
I can paypal $10 for the whole CD or $5 for the driver.. Thanks!
