Comment: Sorry, this isn't about W95 or any other operating system. I have been totally frustrated recently because I am finding it almost impossible to get a battery replaced by the retailer, under guarantee. I have a Compaq Presario 1255 laptop, and the battery packed up after only 4 months. I returned the battery to the people who sold it to me, DIXONS STORE GROUP in the UK, and they have waffled me for the last 4 months about how difficult it is to get hold of a replacement. I know that batteries for this model are available in the States, but does anybody know of a British source for them. I will then purchase it myself and bill the original supplier. Cheers

Reply: (edit)Try Morgan - Each branch has a CD-ROM of over 2000 Laptop Batteries available for sale, The Birmingham branch is best for Mail Order: http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk Tel: 0121-452-1141 But they are not cheap. I would however demand to see the manager. Tell him to Replace the Whole Machine under 12 Month Warranty,(Or take a battery out of a stock item, and mark that machine as faulty) or you will report them to Trading Standards. Do not part with your cash unless its the last resort! I did this with PC World which is part of Dixons!

Reply: (edit)I had a similar problem with my Compaq laptop computer when I bought it. If you purchased your computer new, then you should have a warranty from Compaq. Your instruction manuals should give you the number of a service center near your locale. In my case (in Canada), Compaq mailed me a postage-paid package to place the computer and defective battery in, they checked everything, and returned me the computer with a new battery, gratis as it was under warranty. It turns out the problem was related to a bug in the bios that let the battery leak down. A BIOS patch fixed this problem, and I have never had another battery problem since.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for all your comments, I found that a company that is a part of Dixons had one in stock, and I e-mailed Dixons customer service a stinking letter demanding that this be sorted out in 7 days. It seems to have worked, they are replacing my battery with a Li-Ion one which costs twice as much. I hope this is the last of my problems, but I will definately look into the bios bug problem. Once again, THANKS Phil

Reply: (edit)In the U.K. your Warranty and Contract is with the Supplier not the Manufacturer. So take it back to DIXIONS and DEMAND a replacement. But I would still phone COMPAQ UK to see what they have to say!

Reply: (edit)I'm glad your battery was replaced. I should mention that you can download all system upgrades through the Compaq website: www.compaq.com/support/files/portables. You are then given a menu to pick your computer model number and operating system. It will the give you a list of relevant updates. To update the bios, download the file and prepare a floppy disk. You reboot from the floppy to update the bios. Good luck.
