I'm a PC Technician by trade, but on this occasion I'm stumped and wondering if anyone out there may be able to assist.
I have a client's Compaq Deskpro 4000 here for me to install a modem.
I am trying to install a Connexant 56K PCI Hardware Modem.
When I first boot up, Windows detects it and searches for the driver and successfully installs it.
According to Device Manager, the modem is correctly installed and there are no resource conflicts, etc.
If I go into the modem properties window (from Control Panel) the modem is correctly listed, and I can query the modem and get the modem stats window to appear successfully.
So as far as Windows is concerned, the modem is fine.
However, when I try to dial out from it, using a Dial Up Networking connection, I am recieving an error message:
"The computer is not recieving a response from the modem. It may be in use or turned off."
It's a PCI Modem, so obviously there is no On/Off switch.
There are no other programs trying to access the modem, and if I lift the phone reciever, the dial tone IS present.
And the DUN is set up to use THAT modem.
Thing's I have tried:
>Physically remove, uninstall, re-boot, >then re-install.
>Latest Downloaded Drivers
>Swearing at it !
>Changed resource settings in Device Manager
>Tested the modem in a different PC - Modem >is fine.
>Tried 3 other PCI Modems with different >chipsets - all have exactly the same >problem.
>Tried an External modem - This DOES work !!
>Re-Formatted & re-installed Windblows 98
>Praying
I know that Compaq Deskpro's hate having PCI Sound Cards installed, but I have used these modems in other Deskpro 4000 systems with no problems what so ever.My appologies for such a long post but I wanted to give as much detail as possible in the hopes that someone out there will be able to help me solve what has become a right pain in the you know where !!
5 mins to install a modem has turned into about 8 days so far :0(
Cheers
Simon

Simon, been there, done that many times myself. This may or may not be of any use/help to you. I have gone thru all the steps that you have without success and then did the same thing and for reasons unknow to me the modem is recognized and performs like it should.
I'm assuming you have the CD with the driver. Try this when installing driver via CDROM: Point to(or whatever your CDROm is) D:\Driver\Connexant\Internal\Win9X
Make sure you use X, not 95/98. I tried a thousand times using Win98 without results and for some reason decided to use the X and it worked.Worth a try. Let me know.

Yep - I've checked that god-awful compaq "setup partition" excuse for a BIOS and everything seems ok in there.
Besides which, if the PCI was disabled in the BIOS then it wouldn't even find the modem to install it.
But thanks ever so for the suggestion.
Simon

Thanks Daniel - Yes, I have got the original CD.
Unfortunately, the only choices I have on the CD are NT/9x/2k/ME
Out of those, the only one it'll let me use IS 9x :0(
Have also downloaded the latest drivers.
grrrrrrrrrrrrrr !
Nameless:
The speaker on the modem IS enabled, though at this moment in time that's the least of my worries.
Thanks both for your suggestions.Simon
Back to the drawing board..........

Have you tried changing COM ports? My modem was installing itself to COM 2 by default but never worked until I changed it to COM 3. Just a thought.
Bill

Hi Bill,
Yep - tried changing it's com ports, IRQ's, etc.
Still no joy :0(
Thanks for the thought though.
Any one else ??(Glad to know I'm not the only one who's stumped here !!)
I'm still trying as we speak.
Simon

This probably won't help, but what the hell.
Bill
P.S. Support should have been a four letter word. ;)

have you tried accessing it using hyperterminal? if it works you must have software problem. Perhaps dun is set to never dial my default connection, or something silly like that.

This is a simple solution... but sometimes they are the toughest to diagnose..
could it be a bad phone cord? or maybe a bad telephone port on the modem?
Jason F

Thanks Bill,
lol - as you suspected it wasn't much use.
Well.... ok....it wasn't ANY use !!
:0)
Are those things ever any good ?? lol
But thanks for the suggestion.
I will try just about anything to get this damn modem to install !!!!
Cheers
Simon

Sidney,
Ta for the suggestion.
I'm accessing the connection by going directly into the DUN window and double clicking on the actual connection in question.
Jason,As you say - sometimes it's the simple ones that get overlooked.
The phone cord is fine, but I have tried using a different one.
I've also used this modem in my own PC and it works fine - so it can't be a fault with the modem.
But thanks.
Any more suggestions ? - simple or otherwise ?
(A somewhat Annoyed) Simon

Simon -- Here's another silly ploy you have probably tried already, but maybe not -- have you tried putting the modem in another PCI slot?
One puzzlement. You say this is a hardware modem. Are you sure? The only PCI hardware modems I have seen are USRobotics.

Bill,
Yep - Everything in Device Manager is perfectly K O.
Basically, the modem appears to be fine - No conflicts on ANYTHING in the entire system, etc.
Control Panel lets me query the modem and brings up the modem stats - no probs.

Hi Dave,
Yep - Tried changing it to a different PCI slot - No luck.
Yep - It's definitely a Hardware modem.
It's a Connexant 56K
Connexant being formely known as Rockwell.
But thanks anyway

Simon,
You might try deleting the modem, removing the COM ports in Device Manager and rebooting.

Thanks again bill, but no can do.....
Because an internal modem works on like a "virtual port" (unlike Com's 1 & 2 which are physically on the back of the PC) once I've deleted the modem, the port is automatically removed.
But thanks again for the suggestion.
That said, I could try and remove the port while the modem is installed.........
Nope - just tried that one and no luck.I'm getting really fed up with this now !!!!

i have seen a friend of mine struggle with a similar prob:: its 'some' modem, meaning none of the big names we know of.
it just would NOT work on his 815 intel board no matter what we did.
but surprisingly it work on my 810 D board without a hitchso he just exchanged the modem fr a different one
it could be case of round hole and square peg
there's nothing wrong in both of them individually, but the two dont get along!!!

Just to let you all know that I've got so fed up with it now that I've given up and told the client it's just not going to happen, in favour of going down the pub !!!
A big thanks to all of you for your input - If ya can find which pub I'm in I'll buy you all a drink or 3 !!
And a big No thanks to Compaq as I'm sure a lot of it boils down to them.
Take care all
Simon.

Hi DJ & DC....
Just for your info - No - The PC was NOT on a network of any kind, and all the network settings were correctly configured anyway.
And Yes, I had completely removed the original drivers on many occasions.
I even took the extreme measure of formatting the HDD and re-installing Windows, but still with no luck !!
Oh well - She's got it back now.....WITHOUT her modem !!
