.. no idea what you mean at this point. Try explaining what you're attempting to do.

well......

My computer has 2 gb of space so i tryed to clear everything off it. I accidently cleared so much off that the computer wouldnt start.
So now when i start it up i get a c:\prompt (in MS-DOS).
Since i thought my computer was completely broke i started experimenting with it. I typed in c:\ edit and started editing all the files like himem.sys, config.sys, autobxec(or wotever it is), etc.
Then i asked people for help. They told me to rename files e.g
config.sys to config.123. So i renamed loads of them.
So now there all muddled up. And most of them are deleted. Also my computer says himem.sys file is missing or corrupt. I have no discs for the computer or booklets.
Ive tryed all the bootdisks off bootdisk.com but none work.

Any Ideas?

If you 'edited' himem.sys or much else besides config & autoexec, it's pretty much hosed.

You can get perfectly good boot disks from a number of sites, but if you don't have a disk to install an OS, you're about out of room to manuver.

.. I think I'm sorry I asked.

"Editing all files" - - what's with that?

You haven't even mentioned your Operating System and you also claim that you have no disks yet have deleted numerous files.

Not sure what you're expecting - it all sounds pretty hopeless to me.

I don't think that "bootup disks" are what you need.

Based on your (very) sketchy description of events, you probably need to reinstall Windows - whatever version this may be.

Somewhat problematic without the installation CD - although you might check on your hard drive just in case the installation files have been backed up, say in c:\windows\options\cabs or c:\win98(?)

If this is what you typed in:

c:\windows\options\cabs

yup, it's a bad command.

Try:

dir/s *.cab

You don't just enter the directory name (!?)

Try this:

dir c:\windows\options\cabs

OR

dir c:\win98

This is windows 98 (assuming you know)?

If the files are there, you'll see a large directory listing with many files ending in .CAB

During your editing extravaganza, did you change anything in MSDOS.SYS?

Obtain a Microsoft installation CD for the Operating System that you want to install. Then check back for help in installing.

It went through all these directorys and told me the number of files in them. There was loads of typing.

but underneath it all, it still says c:\....

If you do this:

dir /s *.cab

it will either list some cabs or it wont.

Not much grey area there.

Not very much is clear - whether or not he wiped the drive as mentioned in his previous post, or just deleted and edited the system to death - but no, no installation CD, and seemingly no CABs to be found on the HDD.

Ok - well then you might try reinstalling Windows from DOS, this will replace any deleted original Windows files - you may need your product key though

you need to navigate to the directory (folder) where these CAB files are and enter setup, and make sure that the installation uses c:\windows to install to

Yeah, at your dos prompt type dir/s precopy2.cab and enter. That is one of the 98 installation files. If it is there then most likely all the files necessary to install windows are there too. If the file is there you will get a DIRECTORY OF followed by the path to that file with the file name beneath it. It it's there (but only if it's there) then type ren c:\windows\win.com win.old and enter.

So if, for example, it says
DIRECTORY OF C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS then at the dos prompt type c:\windows\options\cabs\setup and enter. That is, you type in the path as given in the DIRECTORY OF line followed by \SETUP. That should start the windows reinstallation.

When it asks what directory to install windows in it will default to C:\WINDOWS.000. Change that back to C:\WINDOWS so that everything installs in your old directory.

If you don't have the precopy2.cab file then you can't reinstall windows unless you have the installation cd.

Daveincaps.
I done everything you said. A scandisk of drive C came on. Once it had finished this is what it said:
Scandisk found 1265664 bytes of data on drive c that might be one or more lost files or directories, but which is probably just taking up space.
To look at the data choose save, scan disk saves it in the root directory with a file name such as FILE0000.CHK. Then use the TYPE command to view the contents of the file.
Definetly choose save if earlier repairs made any files or directories inacessible.

Then i had a choice of options:
SAVE
DELETE
DON'T FIX IT
MORE INFO

What do i click on?
