Command Interpreter Quandry

OS: None. That's my problem
CPU/Ram: 166mhz with 64 Megs
Comment:

First off, the hardware: I'm on an OmniBook800CT with a 166Mhz Processor, 64 Megs RAM, and 2 Gigs HDspace. It has no built in input devices and I have a PCMCIA CDROM drive (can't seem to find a floppy one anywhere local).
Now to the problem: I tried installing Peanut Linux and (genious that I am) destroyed my functional Windows 95. I have a very clean hard disk with nothing on it and a Request for the name of the Command Interpreter. It still appears to want the Windows Command.com, but I don't have that and I don't have linux. To make life even more fun, I don't have a floppy drive to boot off of. My exact error message reads as follows :
"Type the name of the Command Interpreter (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM)
A>_"
As this has made my laptop essentially worthless, any and all help would be immensly appreciated

(I posted this over in the linux forum as well, as I don't exactly *have* an os anymore, but I'm desperatly needing help over here, so forgive me for the dual postage).

1. Do you have a win9X installation CD?
2. Is your Omnibook capable of booting from the cdrom drive?
3. Do you have access to a PC with a burner?

If the answers to all the above is yes:
Create a bootable CD and include the win9X folder from the Installation CD on it.

Thats a negative. I _have_ a full Win98SE cd, and I have a burner, but as the CDROM is PCMCIA, I'm incapable of booting to it as it requires the OS to initialize it. (or at least all configs in the BIOS I have tried have given me zippo results.

Without a floppy William, you are up the creek without a paddle.

If you can find a floppy, Mesich has instructions on how to get a system up with swappable cd/floppy drives.

The following file is missing or corrupt: COMMAND.
. Type the name
of the Command Interpreter.
To resolve this problem, use the MS-DOS 6.x Upgrade Setup Disk 1 to
restart your computer, and then use the SYS command on drive C. To do
so, follow these steps:

Place the MS-DOS 6.x Upgrade Setup Disk 1 in drive A, and then restart
your computer.

Press the F3 key when MS-DOS Setup starts to exit MS-DOS Setup.

Type sys c:
and then press ENTER.

Restart your computer.

That's the issue. I don't have a floppy drive, at all, and if I were to obtain one, it would be PCMCIA, which (unless I am mistaken) basically requires me to be in Windows or some other OS to initialize it. So...does anyone know a way to init a PCMCIA drive outside of Win?

It seems hard to believe that someone would build a system that would leave someone in this predicament. But who knows.
The only thing that I can think of is that either the floppy or the cdrom drive must be bootable without any pcmcia driver.

Opp's sorry .

Here are some other ideas .

Go to the bios & change & change the boot order to boot from the CD rom 1st .

http://www.laptopbits.co.uk/Technical/support3.htm

Get w98 , which is cd bootable .
http://www.laptopbits.co.uk/Technical/support1.htm

Back to 95 , once you have it set to boot from CD 1st .

As the comp reboots , Toggle F8 ( when , verifying DMI pool message comes on ) or Press Ctrl during bootup , depends on your computer , choose Command prompt only ( NOT Safe mode Command prompt )

Now type in Setup & press Enter .

May not work , but worth a try .

The cdrom drive apparently isn't bootable Johnw.

There is one way William. If the hard drive is a standard IDE drive and you are able to remove it, you could get an adapter to connect a laptop drive to a PC (cheap) and connect it to a different PC temporarily. Then make it bootable and add the win98 folder from your win98 installation CD to it.

Return it to the Omnibook and if everything was done correctly, you should be able to boot it and install windows.

Wow! Thanks for all the responses. I'm gonna start working on laying my hands on a cable as described...I *think* my harddrive is/was a standard IDE. Thanks to everyone for their help. You guys have to be one of the best net communities I've ever run across. Thanks again! ;-)

I kinda have the same problem but not...I have an IBM desktop and it has the cdrom and floppy drive and all that. I have to use my other computer right now to post this message cause when I start my other computer up, it goes to the windows 98 screen then pops to a screen that says:
"The following file is missing or corrupted:C/Windows/HIMEM.SYS
The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\DBLBUFF.SYS
The following file is missing or currupted: C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS
Type the name of the Command Interpreter (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM)
C>

and I dunno what to do....can someone give me a step by step on how to fix this?
I have windows 98 and plently of floppydisks...any suggestions?

Yah, that one's pretty straight. Goto (on the working machine, duh :P) Start==>Setting==>Control Panel==>Add/Remove Programs. Should be three tabs there, one of which will read startup disk. Make one, following their instructions. Then just pop that out, head over to your busted machine and put the disk and the CD in. Wait till you get a prompt then switch to your drive ("D:" for example) and run setup. If your broken computer can boot from the CD, then it's possible that you could just stick the CD in the drive and it will launch the installer. But basically, reinstall. Good luck @ it!
