HELP! I tried to format my hard drive by using format c:

I had a boot disk that started to work then errored out. It seems as if Windows is partially installed, but DOS is not there.

It gives me an error at the C> (note not the c:) type the name of the command interpreter.

I have tried other boot disks from bootdisk.com, but they don't seem to work.

I tried to set-up my CD Rom as the first to check in CMOS, but Windows 98 only comes up for a sec then the type the name of the command interpreter comes up again.

Any thoughts?

hi i would bet you are trying to boot from the hdd first. i suggest changeing cmos to boot floppy drive first. to boot cd first you have to be sure the cd is bootable!

If you are trying to start windows after booting from a floppy, that will not work.

Boot from a floppy and type
scandisk c:
to check out your hard drive.

ok i was wrong. put the boot floppy into the comp you are now using and open it, do you see command.com? it may be hidden. you could also try booting with floppy on comp you are using. when you downloaded from bootdisk.com you did save it to hdd and than ran the file vice saveing the file to floppy or copy it.

If you extracted the files you downloaded from bootdisk.com (and didn't just copy the downloaded file to a floppy) and they didn't boot to an a:\> prompt, then your floppy drive may be bad.

If you use a dos 6.22 bootdisk it won't recognize a partition larger than 2 gig nor will it recognize a fat32 partition. So it wouldn't do you any good to do it that way unless you've got a small HD in your computer.

Since it was a fresh install, get a good bootdisk, reformat and reinstall windows.
