combining text files

I am struggling with how to get a bunch of text files, as many as 600 into one file, into about 50 text files. I have thousands of text files that I need to get into manageable 'units'. I was using a macro to open copy close and paste out and then selects next file and hit enter to run the macro again, but this is too slow. It took me 3 hours to do about 1% of them. Any ideas? By the way, a good way to search a particular site, say this one, is to go to http://www.google.com/advanced_search.html and put in the specific domain, say "computing.net"
