i have another computer that is an eMACHINE 500ii have currently formateed it and lost everything. i have the drivers and stuff, but having one big problem with it. the modem drivers are installed and ready to go until i ran into the com port problem. i dont have com port 3?! i have the serial connection which is com port 1 which doesnt work very well. i need to know how to get com port 3... please help! ThanXXX!!!

Not sure that I understand the problem. However, an internal modem has it's own built in com port. So it might be com port #3.

it's not an internal modem is it? i dont think so... it's a PCI modem.. all i get is com port 1. i have installed the driver for the modem and everythign is set up. just not right com port. remember - com port 1 is serial port.

A PCI modem is an internal modem Tony. Why are you saying that you have a com port problem? If it wants to be on com port 3, what's wrong with that? Since you have comport 1 on the motherboard the modem cannot use that port.

Com ports 1 and 2 are setup for your serial ports on your system.
your internal PCI modem doesn't need a separate Com listing it handles it itself.
You could disable you serial ports in the Bios to free up Com ports 1 and 2 but I wouldn't worry about that now.

PCI modem will be internal,
probably a win modem, some PCI winmodems have a 2 stage setup. first a PCI serial controller or enumerator to set up a port , then the modem drivers. Does the modem show up in control panel? If so , go to the diagnostics tab, select the port that has the modem on it and click on ' more info ', this should open a dialogue box with tech info about the modem if it is working , or a message that it can't be accessed if not.

hehe, you guys don't get it. I think im explaining it wrong. Look all im getting is com port 1 which is serial port. i dont hvae com port 2 or 3. I need to use com port 3. I can NOT use com port 1 it belongs to serial port. I cant see com port 3 in my control pannel when im tryign to select a port. It doesnt seem to exist. Also i have "PCI Communication" in the unknown section in my SYSTEM PROPERTIES. HelP!!!

You need to install the driver for your modem. It might be on the CD that came with your computer. WIthout knowing the type of modem I can not direct you to a driver. Based on what has been written I do not think that there is anything wrong with your computer.

Wow!!! what a great forum. i was thinking the same thing. yes i have the drivers for the modem. Im gonna go work on this tomoorow once i get home! :). thanksssS!! ill be back if it doesnt work hehe
