Yes, it's called SLIP, but it's slow. You should use the parallel port (PLIP). I have used a parallel cable (got it at Best Buy; often called a "laplink cable") from one machine to another and made a TCP/IP connection (that was in Linux, though). I believe I have also used packet drivers (used for DOS) to make it work, but I don't think I've tried it under Windows 9x. Search for it (Google, etc.). You may get lucky. Network cards are cheap. Is this not a desktop machine? Do you have a laptop and no available PCMCIA ports (that was my problem)?
I believe that Direct Cable Connection can use the same kind of cable, but is not TCP/IP (At least it wasn't in 95), but would work for you if your desire is merely to share files between a couple of machines.
Summary: I'm assuming it's a PnP modem which windows would see on it's own. But if it's a modem where the com and irq are selected by jumpers, then the installation is different. In that case you need to do...
