com port detection problems under win 98

everytime win 98 auto detects my com ports (either serial or parallel) it keeps reporting "unknown device" and refuse to install the proper driver. i ve rechecked my bios settings and they are set correctly. any suggestions ?

I have seen this problem (albit in Win 95) when you have another device (ie modem) that is using the same IRQ as another device.
If you have a modem and/or Sound Card take them out and then go into Windows and delete all items from device manager under the category of Ports and "other devices" and then reboot Windows and see what happens.
No No No. Just go to the other device category, doubleclick on update drivers button and install the drivers. This will move the hardware from "other devices" to the appropriate category in device manager. It won't help to remove those items from "other devices" since Win9x will just detect them again. Been there done that. Have Fun! Don't panic! It's a learning thing. ;-)
