and the pc will not boot now at all. I need to alter the CMOW settings back to default, but how do I enter setup. The monitor and pc seem to be in sleep mode or something, but there are no noises when turned on and nothing happens on the screen. I replaced the lithium battery, but need to enter setup. Is there a magic key to press? I have tried to boot up with the delete key or the set up disk to no avail. Am running win98--or was hehehe.

Valerie, The info below should help you.
ENTERING CMOS SETUP
Unfortunately with all the different computers and BIOS chipsets. Entering the setup can be different. The following is a listing of the major ways to enter the CMOS setup and or the BIOS setup.
New Systems
New computers are commonly using one of the four keys to get into the computer setup
F1 during the boot process.
F2 during the boot process.
Esc during the boot process.
Del during the boot process.Older Systems:
Ctrl + Alt + Esc during the boot process.
Ctrl + Alt + Ins during the boot process.
Ctrl + Alt + Enter during the boot process.
Ctrl + Alt + S during the boot up process.
Page up during the boot process.
Page down during the boot process. Some older systems such as early 486, 386, 286 Desktop computers actually required a floppy disk to get into setup, usually refereed to as a ICU / BBU/ SCU disk, this would have to be obtained through your computer manufacturer.

normally during the boot up process I am asked if you want to enter setup press delete. However, the computer is not even booting up and getting this far. It comes on and makes a noise. The monitor light is orange as if it is alseep. There is nothing happening to boot into setup. Any clues what is happening. It is a KTX 32x computer that was upgraded in 1999. The mother board has a few things on it---sorry I am a newbie and this is the first time I have taken the thing apart!) one thing says PC 100 BX PRO. There are some things that say SIS on them. I think it was 32 RAM but has been upgraded. It had a C and a D drive on it before this happened. When I reformatted last week, it appeared to have 5GB disk space. Is any of this making any sense.
I wondered if there was anyway to reset the CMOS by pressing some sort of reset button but I have gone all over the mother board this morning looking and nothing like that. It looks like the CMOS data has been lost do you think if the boot up is not happening?

If nothing is showing up on the screen it's not the cmos. You must have loosened a data cable or power connecter when you were in the case. Also try reseating the memory and cpu.
Once you get it going and get into cmos you can choose a default setting if you're not sure of each individual value.

I posted my message above right after yours. Sorry.
Is the lights coming on on the cpu cabinet...the harddrive lite and the power lite?

All lights come on in the a drive--cd rom drive and it makes the normal noise. the monitor light is orange as if in sleep after a spark of green. I have to confess that I removed the battery deliberately to reset the cmos settings as I altered the Hz in one setting. LOL! I reformatted last week and it would only boot into 16 color depth and even after tinkering around in settings I could not alter it to 256. Anyway---off the subject here. I wanted to deliberately reset the settings. Someone else said I could have taken out a jumper but I have no idea what it looks like. The motherboard is as above. I have looked to see if everything is connected to where it should be. Before I removed the battery I had the message "checking NVRAM" after booting up after altering that setting. But it would go no further than that in the boot process, so I felt the only way to solve that was reset things. As I reformatted, I was not bothered about losing data because i had only just run win98 on it. I just want to get back in there now and set everything back to default again. But like I said---the something is not telling the monitor to fire up--sorry I am a newbie---lol.

Dave--how do I reset the memory and cpu? Can you tell me that---I may as well have a clean slate here if we ahave come this far.

Remove them, make sure the sockets are clean--blow some compressed air on them if possible and reinstall.
A hard drive cable on backward can cause those symptoms also. If you removed it to change the battery you might want to check that. The red stripped edge of the ribbon cable needs to be connected to the #1 pin side of the hard drive and motherboard connections. On the HD the #1 pin is located on the side closest to the power connnection. (At least on 99% of the drives. If you look close it should be marked on the circuit board.)

I have no compressed air ...except in my lungs---will that do? So can I blow--As long as I don't spit in em? LOL...I will be building pc's by the end of this week---lol--it is quite exhilarating actually---I should have done this months ago. i may not have been so scared of crashing the pc!

You might look into getting a refillable air tank. I just refill mine at the gas station. Those air duster spray cans get to be expensive after awhile.

Let this be a lesson to all who read this:
While everything is working O.K., print a copy of the CMOS settings. Enter CMOS and press "Print Screen" for each page.
There are a lot of other things you should copy-all best done BEFORE rather than AFTER you have a problem.
Don

Yes Don! Lesson learned here I think---but exciting stuff here nevertheless! I'l be building pc's at this rate with 6 months of expert training! I am amazed by the workings of the pc. I found my Mother board manual and studied where the jumper is. It is JP8 as I have a pentium mainboard. When I study the setting---it gives two different settings for clear CMOS and Normal mode. I know from this manual what to set the defaults to now WHEN I get in the setup to sort things. Infact, looking at this---I probably could check ALL jumpers and make sure that they are ALL working as they should now and even configure these CMOS settings to maximise the pc. However...I see that you uses switches to switch to 1-2 or 2-3 on the jumper and I wondered how one does that. They look awfully tiny and obviously not fingernail stuff! How do I set the switched on the jumpers? What do I use? I think I must be masochistic as I am actually enjoying this now! LOL! Just a way to go with you guys i.e. exact minute detail about the switched with diagrams if poss please---any on web pages anywhere?
