I own a Dell Lat notebook/laptop, and I have forgotten my password (old age I guess) to get back into my data. Dell is giving me the run around since I purchased this by another vender (Mr. Notbook in Austin, Texas), and will not give me a password to clear (even though I have a valid receipt), can some one please help me? Has someone figured a way around this. There is no battery (like in a desk-top unit) that I can readily see, and I was told it can only be done by a password given to you by dell. Please help, for I need info off my drive. Heck, I need to be able to use the darn thing.

Dell has (or had when I last checked) a good chat site. You might try that. There's probably a jumper on the motherboard to clear if, if you want to risk opening up a laptop.

You must talk to Dell and give them the service tag number, the name of the person or company the unit is registered to and they can generate a primary password that will work with your laptop and service tag number. Removing the CMOS battery will do no good.

Try cracking the password with software if you don't wanna open up your laptop:

I have found a site that gives many hints tips and tweeks. On that site there are these instructions for solving your problems. Boot to a dos prompt by holding control down while booting At the C:> prompt type: debug then you will see a "-" prompt. At this prompt type: o 70 2e Hit enter then type: o 71 ff Hit enter again and type q Restart your computer and you should have removed the bios password. What you have done is change the data that is stored in the flash memory. Although I normally do not copy any other's information this is listed as free information on this site: http://members.aol.com/axcel216/ This site has almost an endless amount of information. It is well worth the time to take a look.
