On start-up on a 486/66 win 95 with 2 HDs the following prompt is shown. "CMOS SYSTEM OPTIONS NOT SET" "CMOS DISPLAY TYPE MISMATCH" "RUN SET-UP UTILITY" The computer has worked fine with both drives for quite a while, what's the deal!

It semms you will have to go into the BIOS Setup (usually Delete or F2 during memory check) and change which display type is set there (XGA-VGA-SVGA). IF it changes on you again after a shutdown you may need a new battery for the CMOS.

DRAM and SDRAM are supplied in different flavors, such as EDO, and in different speeds. The newer motherboards try to match banks. If the chips are too different, slot to slot, an error is reported.
Sometimes this can be automatically adjusted by entering CMOS setup. Sometimes not; it's necessary to buy chips that match.
This is my simple explanation.
