Hi all,
I am having major problems trying to get my friends computer working properly.
have reinstalled windows and most things work well, except for ,

it will NOT recognise the mouse no matter what i seem to try,

i have uninstalled it from device manager and reloaded the right drivers still comes up with a message box saying windows does not recogfnise the mouse..

it is a good mouse goes in other computers..
logitech M-38, i have the right drivers..

it is very hard doing everything without a mouse and frustrating..

that is one oproblem ..
the other is

i get this

"CMOS checksum error - default loaded"
"CMOS Settings Wrong"
"CMOS Checksum bad"
"CMOS Display Type wrong"
"Battery low"

everytime i enter start up..

i HAVE replaced the cmos battery
i changed some of the settings in the bios, mainly the time and date

and every time i have to reboot with the defaults it changes the time ane date.

i wonder does anyone here have the correct settings for the AMI BIOS released 8/26/99
nearly all the settings are set on auto

i need a guide as to how to change the settings and keep them changed or the correct settings..

i have to push enter during setup to get past a certain stage where ther is a little '-' (dash) flicking on and off.

and some help from all of you here..
i know i can get this working..

many thanks
in advance

For your mouse problem, take a look in the computer to see if the port that you use for the mouse is correctly connected to the mobo.

What type of mouse is it?
Serial?
PS/2?
USB?
If it is PS/2 and you are pluging it into the Compaq Serial Port using a generic adapter that is your problem. The adapter from PS/2 to Serial needs to be what came with the mouse before it will work properly.
If USB check in BIOS for USB enabled mouse settings.

Either your 'new' battery is also bad, it's not powering up the cmos circuitry (bad connection or solder joint) or the cmos circuitry is bad.

how do i find out which port the mouse is using??
it has no information under 'mouse" in device manager and no information under ports, in device manager..

the mouse is a ps/2 mouse and is connected with the correct connection in the correct port..it is all color coded.?

i will check the battery..
but i am sure it is an ok battery??

thanks
any more suggestions welcome
thanks gemma

you could try looking up the problem on the compaq/hp website as it may be a known issue with a bad BIOS. see if they have a flash update for it.

Just for the record check the Pins and
plug of the mouse socket they are easy to
damage.
